Magiclay Dragon Eye

In this lesson students will use Magiclay and Modelling Foam to model a dragon eye. Students will use a Creature Eye as a base and then apply Magiclay and Modelling Foam to create different shapes and details to make the eye appear like it belongs to a  dragon or a mystical creature.

Lesson 1

Students look at images of dragon’s eyes and other fantasy creatures. What art elements can they see and where? Describe the colours, shapes and textures that can be seen.

Introduce students to Magiclay and Modelling Foam. What is the difference between these two materials and the similarities? Show how shapes can be modelled and joined together to create form.

Students choose a Creature Eye and explore shapes that can be made with the Magiclay and Modelling Foam with the Creature Eye to make a dragon eye design. To begin the eye students must press some of the foam or clay flat and then press the eye in to it as a base. Students can start building from that base.

Reflection:

Students look at each other’s designs. Students present their work and discuss the process they went through and how they created their work. How did they model shapes and how did they combine them to create form.

Extension:

Students can create their own eye by drawing their designs on paper and use markers to create details and colours. They can then glue this on to a glass stone to make their own unique eye designs.
