Step into the studio for a two-day, in-person painting intensive with Dan Butterworth and Richard Healy—a focused opportunity to immerse yourself in colour, surface and process, and to build stronger painting instincts through sustained making. Designed as a mid-year reset, this workshop supports you to work with clarity and confidence, and to extend your practice in a way that feels both purposeful and energising.
Across the two days you’ll follow a clear studio rhythm of artist demonstrations, guided activities and generous painting time, with space to pause, adjust and push work further. You’ll be alongside colleagues and fellow educators, sharing ideas and encouragement in a supportive environment where experimentation is welcomed. You’ll leave with fresh momentum, practical approaches you can return to again and again, and teaching-ready inspiration you can translate straight into rich classroom learning.
Dan Butterworth
Daniel Butterworth will run a one-day portrait painting workshop for teachers, working with the figure through a limited four-colour palette. Using paint and direct, expressive handling, participants will explore fresh processes for building tone, depth and character with restraint—alongside Daniel’s loose, energetic approach in a supportive studio environment with plenty of time to make and refine.
Daniel Butterworth is a Doug Moran and Archibald Prize finalist portrait artist, recently featured on ABC’s Portrait Artist of the Year. Doug Moran and Archibald Prize finalist Daniel Butterworth is an established Australian portrait artist known for raw, psychologically charged figurative work—often using self-portraiture to explore social, political and personal themes. He has been a finalist in the Doug Moran National Portrait Prize (2010, 2013), the Black Swan Portraiture Prize (2015), and has exhibited widely, working from his studio in Kyneton, Victoria.
Richard Healy
Artist Richard Healy will run a one-day alla prima portrait painting workshop for teachers, working from life in oils. With a strong emphasis on observation, participants will develop new processes that strengthen paint handling and portrait skills while working towards capturing likeness and presence. The day will draw on a clear portrait painting process, focusing on composition, drawing, colour mixing and value—bringing these elements together as you paint, refine and build momentum in your practice under Richard’s supportive guidance.
Richard Healy is a Perth-born Australian artist based in Melbourne. His multidisciplinary practice moves across mediums and industries, working as an artist in film and video games alongside his fine art practice. Healy has exhibited in Australia and overseas, and his paintings draw on portraits and the figure alongside landscape and abstraction—shifting between genres to construct compelling, contemporary images. Richard has been recognised through awards and exhibitions, including being a finalist in the National Youth Self-Portrait Prize (National Portrait Gallery of Australia) and a recipient of the Cream Award.
