Learning objective
The learning objectives for this lesson are to explore the abstract and expressive techniques of Pablo Picasso to create a layered self-portrait using recycled cardboard. They will develop an understanding of distortion, shape, and texture to represent emotion and personality, while experimenting with composition and structure. Through tracing, cutting, and assembling, students will explore how form and placement affect meaning in portraiture.
Materials
- Recycled cardboard (corrugated, smooth, painted)
- High contrast printed self-portraits
- Graphite pencils (2B, 4B)
- Pastels (neutral tones recommended)
- Tracing paper and graphite transfer paper
- Scissors
- Supertac glue / Glue sticks
- Cutting mats and precision knives (with supervision)
- Envelopes for storing small pieces
- Wooden glue sticks or skewers
- Erasers, blue tack or masking tape
