Single Line Portrait Collage
Lesson 1
Students look at a variety of different styles of portraits (Picasso, Van Gough, Modigliani, etc). Discuss the differences in each style and how art can be abstract or realistic.
tudents will create their own abstract portrait collage. To begin students will practice drawing themselves using a mirror or photo. Students will focus on only using a single line (not taking your pen off the paper) and without looking at the page (only looking at the mirror or photo while drawing)
Students create multiple drawings (at least 6). Once complete students will use coloured pencils to colour in some of the small closed in shapes of their portraits. They will then cut out their faces. Students will then layer their faces on a coloured piece of paper trying multiple compositions before pasting them down.
Reflection:
Students analyse their work by comparing and contrasting their piece with another artist’s work.
Extension:
Students can create a large group work by joining together their own portraits with other student’s into one collaborative piece.
