Scratch Back Texture Exploration

In this lesson students will explore the medium of scratch art and how to create a variety of different textures. Students will explore the techniques of hatching, cross hatching and stippling. Students will experiment with creating a range of different lines to create different textures on a scratch board.

Lesson 1

Students discuss the work of American illustrator Beth Krommes. Discuss how the work is made, what materials are used and how do students think this is different from using a pencil to draw with? What textures can you see and how would you describe them?

Students explore texture. Discuss how to hatch, cross hatch and create a stippling effect. Students try to create a variety of different textures by using different kinds of lines with a pencil. Once students have experimented with creating different shapes, lines and patterns with their pencil to create texture they repeat these textures on scratch board.

Students trace a shape over the scratch board multiple times. Students will create a different texture and use a different technique in each shape using scratch tools.

Reflection:

What textures have you created and how have you created them? How is creating texture using a pencil different compared to using a scratch tool?

Extension:

Using the skills which they have just learnt in creating texture on scratch board students can create their own illustration inspired by Krommes.
