Kintsugi Collage

In this lesson, students will explore the concepts and aesthetics of kintsugi artworks. They will engage in techniques using gold leaf or gold markers combined with torn paper collage to create small paper artworks inspired by the kintsugi aesthetic.

Lesson 1

In this lesson, students explore kintsugi artworks as a class, discussing the materials used in these works and the meaning behind the technique. Students analyze the shapes, lines, and colours found in the artworks. Students then create their own papers or select pre-decorated papers to use in their artwork. They tear these papers into small pieces and paste them onto a piece of cartridge paper. Using gold leaf or a gold marker, they accentuate the torn lines by going over them. Students will then seal their work with Zart Podge.

Lesson 2

During this lesson, students choose a design for their collage kintsugi pieces, such as vases, tea cups, or tea pots. They draw their chosen design on the back of the collage paper and cut it out. Optionally, students can outline their work with a black marker. They can create multiple objects using the same sheet of paper or use different coloured and patterend papers.

Reflection:

Students can reflect on the meaning behind kintsugi and analuse the differences in working with paper compared to ceramic or porcelain objects.

Extension:

Students can create their own patterned paper drawing inspiration from the colours and patterns of Asian pottery.
