Impressionist Oil Pastel Drawings

In this lesson students learn about the impressionist style and Monet. Students will create a drawing inspired by Monet on pre made patterned paper with impressionist patterns. Students study Monet’s works and add in details on to their impressionist paper to make it resemble one of Monet’s paintings using Supermix.

Lesson 1

Students explore the art of Claude Monet. Students discuss his style, use of line, colour and how light is conveyed in his paintings. Students will then look at impressionist style papers and match the papers to some of the artworks and discuss some of the similarities in the shapes, lines and patterns which have been created.

Discuss appropriation in art and what it means. Explain the differences between an appropriation and a copy.

Students choose an artwork and an impressionist printed paper which they think has similarities. Students will then use oil pastels to add details on to the pattern paper to emulate one of Monet’s works.

Reflection:

Describe the impressionist style. How is your work similar to Monet’s? How is it different?

Extension:

Students can experiment with appropriating more of Monet’s works and adding in modern elements (explore works by Banksy, Show me the Monet).
