In this lesson students will create a clay gingerbread house using hand modelling techniques and clay tools.
Clay Gingerbread House
Lesson 1
Students discuss the art elements of form and scale as a class. Explore the difference between a 2D shape and a 3D form as well as how the scale of an artwork can impact the way it is read or viewed by an audience. Show students a variety of different hand modelling techniques with clay and how different tools can be used to create different textures.
Students create a design for their own clay gingerbread house. Students should consider the different textures they can create as well as the scale of their work and how they may join pieces of clay together to construct their piece.
Lesson 2
Students begin constructing the clay house. Students should begin by rolling an even slab of clay and trimming down into 2 small rectangles. Students can then experiment with their clay tools to create different textures in their house which match their design. They can also hand model separate piece.
Lesson 3
Students add colour to their dried clay house using watercolour paints.
Reflection
Students reflect on the hand building skills which they used to create their form and how scale and form are created and used in their work
Extension
Students can add small details to their clay house using paint markers to add pattern.
