Sun Dyes are Heliographic or ‘Sun Sensitive’ fabric paints. After painting any fabric with Sun Dyes, place found objects, such as leaves, twigs or feathers or make your own shapes with paper or cardboard stencils or shapes on the fabric and expose it to full sun. Once the dye has dried you will be left with a beautiful ghost image of your shapes.
To finish, iron the fabric and the colour is permanent and wash fast. These paints are a concentrate which can be diluted by half with water. Easy to use, soft to handle and permanent. Great for kids as a class activity or as an embellishment for embroidery, quilting, garments, cushions, bedlinen or wall decoration – all you need is a still, sunny day!
Only suitable for natural fibres. Water-based. Made in Australia.

Additional Information

To Start:
Dilute Sun Dye by half with water.
Lay your fabric on a flat, plastic covered table in the sun and tape the edges to secure it. Small pieces can be stretched in an embroiderers hoop and larger pieces on the ground, secured at the corners.

Next:
With a sponge brush or large flat basting brush, coat your fabric with diluted Sun Dye – you can do this using one or more colours.
While it’s still wet, lay your shapes or objects on the fabric.
Allow the fabric to dry in the sun or under an infa-red lamp. The shapes will be left as silhouettes in the colour.
* If you use predyed fabric, the base colour will remain and the painted colour disappears *
Once the dye has dried, remove the shapes/objects and iron the reverse side of the fabric for 2 to 3 minutes (iron as hot as fabric will allow) to set the colour.
Allow to sit for 24 hours.
Rinse well in warm water.
