Woven Monsters

In this video we use multicoloured yarn to weave a basic shape that we will then transform into a monster inspired by a story using felt, joggle eyes and chenille stems.

Step 1

Lightly draw a rough outline for your monster shape on a piece of square card. You can base your monster on a character from a book or your own imagination.

Step 2

Mark out the widest part of your shape and rule a line from the top of the square to the bottom on both sides. Mark out 5mm increments between the two lines at the top and the bottom. Rule a line 1cm from the top and the bottom and use this line as a guide to make a scissor cut at every 5mm interval. These cuts are where you will thread your warp yarn.

Step 3

Erase all of your guide lines keeping only your shape outline as weaving guide.

Step 4

Thread up your warp yarn and secure the ends onto the reverse side of the card with tape.

Step 5

Begin weaving your monster by working back and forth until you have your shape is complete. Push your weft yarn down as you go to give a more compact weave. When changing to a new piece of yarn simply tie off the end onto a warp thread and tie on the new piece on the opposite side. When your shape is finished weave any yarn ends through your shape and trim.

Step 6

You can now glue on Chenille Stems, Joggle Eyes and cut out felt shapes to create your monster’s features.
