In this video activity we create a tissue transfer clay dish with a patterned surface as a gift for Mothers day.
Tissue Transfer Clay Dish
Step 1
Cut off a fist sized piece of clay and work it into a ball to help remove air bubbles.
Step 2
Roll your clay ball into a flat slab aprox 1cm thick and then use a sharp edged clay tool to cut out an oval shape.
Step 3
Cut a piece of transfer tissue slightly larger than your oval and place it printed side down onto the clay. Use a damp sponge to press down onto the back of the tissue and leave for a few minutes. Gently lift one corner of the tissue to see if the transfer has worked. You can press the tissue back down and add a little more water if you need to.
Step 4
Carefully remove the tissue and shape the lip of the dish by pushing the edges upwards and smoothing with a flat tool or your fingers. Leave your dish to completely dry.
Step 5
Fire your dish in the kiln to earthenware temperatures.
Step 6
Brush on a coat of clear glaze and leave to dry. You can now fire your dish in a Kiln for a glaze fire.
