In this video, we will learn three soft pastel application techniques: blending, stippling and hatching. We will then combine the three techniques to create a soft pastel landscape.
Soft Pastel Landscapes
Step 1
Download and print the Worksheet provided below, or use two sheets of A4 cartridge paper. Keep all of your technique practice on one sheet and create your landscape on the second sheet.
Step 2
Use soft pastels to practise blending: lay down two areas of different colour next to each other, then use a pastel tool or your fingers to smudge the colours together. This technique is great for backgrounds, giving you a thin layer of pastel with a smooth blend of colour.
Step 3
Practise stippling: make short, brisk strokes or dots over your paper with the edge of your pastel to create texture. Try adding a few different colours to create tonal value and vibrancy.
Step 4
Practise hatching: use the edge of your pastel to create a series of fine lines spaced closely together. This technique is used for shading and texture. You can apply more lines over the first set, but in a different direction to add depth. Try changing colours for a textured blend.
Step 5
Combine the three pastel application techniques to create your own landscape.
