Mariko Koda Inspired Fashion Collage

In this video we will take inspiration from the vibrant works of mixed media artist Mariko Koda. Starting with a fashion magazine page, we layer paper, sequins, straws, buttons and more to create a vibrant artwork that focuses on the use of pattern. More is more!

Step 1

Cut a page out of a fashion magazine. Choose an image of a person whose body takes up most of the height of the page.

Step 2

Glue your magazine page onto a piece of A3 Kraft card and then use acrylic paint to cover over the background of your magazine page. Leave the paint to dry.

Step 3

Create a new item of clothing for your person using a cut out piece of coloured paper and glue this in place over the existing clothing. The more exaggerated the new clothing is the better the end result will be.

Step 4

Glue an assortment of items onto your paper clothing such as beads, sequins, straws, pipe cleaners, feathers etc. Focus on creating patterns with your collaged items.

Step 5

Use colourful paint markers to draw pattern over the painted background of your image. Then use slicks and paint markers to create a contrasting pattern on the exposed kraft card.

Step 6

Use felt, yarn or another 3D material to create some exaggerated hair for your fashion model. Leave everything to dry for 1-2 hours before you display your colourful fashion parade.
