Collaborative Landscapes

In this video, we go out on Country to create a series of crayon rubbings from leaves, bark and other textured surfaces we find. We then cut shapes from our rubbings and combine them to create a collaborative landscape inspired by the environment around us.

Step 1

Create a series of crayon rubbings by placing a sheet of multipurpose paper on a textured surface, such as tree bark, and rubbing over the paper with the side of a crayon. Encourage students to explore their outdoor surroundings, make rubbings of plants and surfaces, and collect fallen leaves and seed pods to bring back to the classroom for more rubbings.

Step 2

Students can now cut shapes from their rubbings to create plants, birds and animals found in their outdoor environment.

Step 3

Cut a long length from a paper roll and draw a horizon line, along with any topographical features unique to your area. Ask students to glue their paper creations onto the landscape. Once dry, display your collaborative artwork.
