Quick-Drying and Wonderful for 3D Modelling

ArtRoc (Modroc) is a plaster-impregnated cloth, perfect for sculpture, model-making, and construction projects. This easy-to-use, quick-drying material can be used on its own or combined with armature wire, box construction, moulds, chicken wire, or rolled-up newspaper, making it ideal for building strong, lightweight structures. Once activated with water, it becomes malleable and easy to shape, drying to a hard, durable surface. The finished dry construction can be painted, drawn on, glossed, or embellished, making it a versatile choice for creative classrooms and studios.
Care instructions: DO NOT throw the ArtRoc water down domestic sinks as the plaster residue will block drains; throw the water outside into a garden. Be careful to have a well-ventilated area. Encourage students not to shake the ArtRoc, as excessive plaster powder will be released into the air. This is not good for breathing or for cleaning.

In the art room, ArtRoc plaster bandages are perfect for mask-making, sculptural forms, and mixed-media projects. Teachers can guide students through layering techniques to create textured surfaces, detailed figurines, or life-sized models. For best results, use Modroc Shears to cut strips to size, and ensure holes and staples are added before the plaster dries. Always dispose of excess water outdoors, as plaster residue can clog sinks. Working in a well-ventilated area is recommended to avoid excess plaster dust in the air.

Drying Time: Drying time will vary depending on room temperature and how many layers of ArtRoc have been used. It will take approximately 6 - 8 hours for three layers of ArtRoc to dry in a moderate room temperature of around 20 °C.

Reworking a Form: Although ArtRoc can be softened with water after it has dried, it is not recommended and can damage the plasters ability to harden again. It is possible however to apply wet ArtRoc over dry allowing a project to be worked on indefinitely.

Sculptural Forms: Experiment by creating Modroc 'sheets' which can then be impregnated with objects, printed, coloured and sewn. Explore surface textures, form and design.

Basic ArtRoc Sculpting Steps:
Step 1: Create an armature from polystyrene shapes, newspaper, wire, cardboard, masking tape, etc.
Step 2: Use Modroc Shears to cut strips of ArtRoc suitable for the size of the artwork.
Step 3: Add a squirt of PVA to a container of water.
Step 4: Dip single ArtRoc strips into water/PVA mixture and squeeze out excess water.
Step 5: Wrap ArtRoc over your armature, making sure to overlap strips and vary directions to give strength.
Step 6: Smooth the ArtRoc with fingers to blend the plaster and hide the edges of the bandages.
