PROCION DYE QUESTION:
Q: How many metres of fabric can you dye with 50g of Procion Dye?
A: You can dye 10 metres of fabric with 50g of Procion dye.

SIMPLE PROCION DYEING METHOD :
50g of dye will dye 1 kilo of fabric to full strength. For paler shades just use less dye. Use enough water to cover your For every litre of water, you will need 50g of cooking salt dissolved in 3 tbsp of warm water, 5g of Soda Ash dissolved in 1tsp of warm water. Dissolve dye powder in boiling water. Approximately 1 heaped teaspoon of dye powder weighs about 5g.

1. Place your fabric in a bucket, laundry trough or any large plastic container.
2. Measure enough cold water into your dyepot to cover the fabric.
3. For every litre of water in the dyebath, you need 50gms of Salt. Dissolve the salt solution and dye and add to dyebath, stirring well.
4. Add fabric to the dyebath and stir again.
5. Leave to stand for 30 – 40 mins, stirring regularly to avoid unevenness.
6. When fabric has reached desired depth of colour, add Soda Ash solution, and stir well. This will fix the dye on the fabric.
7. Leave to stand for 30 – 40 mins, stirring regularly again to avoid unevenness.
8. Remove fabric from dyebath, squeeze out excess liquid and wash thoroughly in hot, soapy water, then rinse until water runs clear.

PROCION DYES – FIBRE REACTIVE DYES
Cold water dyes for- cotton, silk & rayon- This includes hemp, linen & calico
**Note- does not dye polyester or polycotton**
Procion Dyes do require extra additives. Common cooking salt (not iodised) & Soda Ash.

DYE BATH – QUICK RECIPE
5g (1 teaspoon) Procion Dye per 100g dry fabric or approximately 1m fabric 60g common cooking salt (3 tablespoons) per litre of water 10g Soda Ash (2 teaspoons) per litre of water.

Q: What does the salt & the soda do?
A: The salt pushes the dye on to the fabric The Soda Ash fixes the dye, hence the name “fibre reactive dyes”. The two chemicals create a bonding process with the dye and the fabric.

1. Measure out how much water you will require to cover your fabric.
2. Place in a bucket, plastic trough etc.
3. Paste down the dye, salt & soda ash in warm to hot water (the salt and soda ash you will have measured out according to how much water you are using) and add to your bucket of cold to warm tap water.
4. Pre wet your fabric, this will ensure a more even dyeing result.
5. Add the wet fabric to your dye bath. At this stage you can decide whether you are doing an even dyeing (this will require you to keep stirring the dye bath), tie dyeing, pole wrapping, scrunching and other resist dyeing methods
6. After 30-40 mins take your fabric out of the dye bath and rinse in hot soapy water until the water runs clear.

If you require more than one colour you can re-use the same dye bath, keeping in mind most of the original dye should have exhausted itself on to the fabric and you will have quite bright looking dye water but a very weak dye solution. You will need to add more dye plus salt and soda ash.
