Mosaic Art Inspired by Deborah Halpern

The learning objectives for this lesson are to create a mosaic inspired by Deborah Halpern's style and method, focusing on a section of a facial feature (e.g., an eye or nose). They will design, assemble and grout their mosaic using inverted tile placement on contact paper, exploring size, colour and composition while reflecting on the expressive qualities of mosaic art.

Materials     

  • Mosaic tiles (varied colours and sizes)
  • Contact paper
  • Plastic board or wood or another flat surface (e.g., MDF board)
  • Glue: Mosaic tile adhesive and SuperTac
  • Grout and tools (sponges, buckets, grout spreaders)
  • Scissors and tile cutters (if needed)
  • Gloves and masks (if needed)
  • Design paper and pencils for planning
