Magiclay Butterflies Inspired By Adam Johnson

Learning objective

The learning objectives for this lesson are to explore the concepts of symmetry, texture and design to create a Magiclay butterfly inspired by ceramic artist Adam Johnson. Students will use folding, cutting, Magiclay sculpting and surface embellishment techniques to create a butterfly that reflects mood and personal expression through colour and design. They will consider creative display options and reflect on how their work developed from their initial plan.

Materials     

  • A4 or A3 cardboard for base
  • Acetate Sheet
  • Scissors
  • Magiclay (white or coloured)
  • PVA glue
  • Pencils, markers, or watercolours
  • Surface texture tools (stamps, found objects, fabrics, etc.)
  • Optional: iridescent paints, metallic markers, glitter, natural textures (leaves, lace)
