Ceramic Drop Bears

Hand-built ceramic drop bear sculpture with textured grey fur, large ears and an expressive face, displayed on a pottery work surface surrounded by clay tools and materials during the making process from the Zart Education On Demand activity 'Ceramic Drop Bears'.

The learning objectives for this lesson are to explore the process of translating a child's drawing of the mythical Australian drop bear into a three-dimensional ceramic sculpture. Working with air-dry clay, students build a hollow pinch-pot form, add features and texture, then finish their creature with acrylic paint — celebrating imagination, humour, and Australian storytelling.

Materials:

  • Air-dry clay
  • Water and small water containers
  • Sculpting tools
  • Acrylic paint
  • Paintbrushes
