Carving Clay Inspired by Kurinuki technique

In this lesson students will explore the Japanese Kurinuki technique by carving forms from solid clay blocks. Students will respond to the material's qualities, experiment with asymmetry and texture, and reflect on the expressive potential of form and surface.

  • Stoneware or paper clay (preferably with grog)
  • Ribbon tools, loop tools, pin tools
  • Wooden or metal carving tools
  • Newspaper or turning wheel
  • Potters knife or paint scraper
  • Clay sponge

Optional: Underglazes, slips, natural fibres, found objects
