
Blind Embossing Inspired by Sean Thornhill

The learning objectives for this lesson are to explore geometric abstraction and relief-based design by creating a blind embossed artwork, inspired by Sean Thornhill’s layered compositions. Students will investigate the relationship between shape, balance, material and light through experimental printmaking processes.
Materials
- Mountboard or recycled frame backing board
- Pasteboard, boxboard, strawboard (varied thicknesses)
- Scissors, craft knives, safety rulers
- Strong glue (e.g. Supertac)
- Aluminium foil
- Printmaking paper (e.g. Hahnemühle)
- Water container, blotting towels
- Crayons, graphite, or drawing blocks (for rubbings)
Optional: Watercolour pencils
