Blind Embossing Inspired by Sean Thornhill

The learning objectives for this lesson are to explore geometric abstraction and relief-based design by creating a blind embossed artwork, inspired by Sean Thornhill’s layered compositions. Students will investigate the relationship between shape, balance, material and light through experimental printmaking processes.

Materials     

  • Mountboard or recycled frame backing board
  • Pasteboard, boxboard, strawboard (varied thicknesses)
  • Scissors, craft knives, safety rulers
  • Strong glue (e.g. Supertac)
  • Aluminium foil
  • Printmaking paper (e.g. Hahnemühle)
  • Water container, blotting towels
  • Crayons, graphite, or drawing blocks (for rubbings)
