Whale Shark Layered Gel Plate Print

In this video we will explore layering Acrylic Paint onto a gel print to create a multi coloured print of a Whale Shark.

Step 1

Apply a thin layer of black acrylic paint to your gel plate with a brayer.

Step 2

Draw your whale shark by removing areas of the black paint with an art swab. You can also use soft brushes for a more textured effect. When you are happy with your image leave the black paint to dry.

Step 3

You can now apply smooth, flat areas of colour over the dried paint. Make sure to use soft brushes so as not to disturb the black paint layer. When you are happy with the coloured layer leave the paint to dry completely.

Step 4

Now you can add a thin final background paint layer using a brayer. While your background layer is wet place a sheet of cartridge onto the gel plate and gently smooth over the back of the paper with your hands. You will need to leave the paint and paper to dry completely. A hair drier can speed up this part.

Step 5

With the paper on the surface of your table, slowly and carefully peel back the gel plate to reveal your print.
