Monster Mash Up Drawing
Lesson 1
Students will look at different styles of cartooning and discuss the similarities and differences between certain styles.
Students will create their own cartoon monster drawing through using abstract shapes. Students will begin by drawing a continuous line across and around their page with a pencil to fill the whole sheet. These lines should have rounded ends and intersect with each other. From these abstract lines students will pick out the shapes of different monsters and add details such as faces, ears, tails, hands, legs, etc.
Once all details are drawn students will use watercolour pencils to accentuate their chosen forms. They will choose an area for their light source and shade the opposite side of each monster in colour. They will then use a brush to spread the watercolour across their monster to create different tones.
Reflection:
Discuss the style of another student’s drawing. Compare and contrast with other cartoons and how the styles are similar and different using art language.
Extension:
Try the same process with straight lines and geometric shapes instead of curved lines as the base of your drawing.
