AMindiJourneyThestudentsatCareyBaptistGrammarSchoolinDonvalecommencedtheirMindijourneybystudyingtheWurundjeripeoplewhooncelivedandhuntedintheareaaroundtheschool.Thisconnectionhashadadeepimpactontheirunderstandingsandhasbeentheinspirationforthesignicantelementsofthenalartwork.WeworkedcloselywiththeWurundjeripeopleandtheKoorieHeritageTrusttoauthenticatethehistoricalandculturalsettingforthework.Theyhavebeenbothsupportiveandgenerousandourstudentshavebeenexposedtotheircultureinanindepthfashion.Studentswereencouragedtoworkalongsidemetogainanunderstandingofthestepsthatarenecessarytodesignandmakethenishedwork.Togetherwesolvedthepracticalmathematicalcreativeandartisticproblemsthatarose.Involvingthestudentsinthedesignprocessanddiscussingtheissuesthatneededtoberesolvedwasparamounttothislearningexperience.Studentsdiscussedandwereabletounderstandtheprocessofworkingonadesignitspossibilitiesandlimitations.WelookedathowweneededtocreateacollaborativeworkandyetallowforindividualexpressiontoprovideaninstallationthatwastruetotheWurundjeripeople.Studentsgainedanunderstandingoftheneedfortheworktomakeaconnectiontothespaceinwhichitwastobeinstalled.Theylearntaboutthecultureofthetribewhohavebeeninourareaforover40000years.TheyconsideredthechoiceofmaterialstobeusedintheconstructionoftheworkanditspotentialtoreectthesubtletiesoftheenvironmentandthesymbolismoftheserpentMindi.ThisserpentisgreatlyrespectedbytheWurundjerianditwasthereforeparamountthatthenishedinstallationsatinharmonywiththelandscape.Othermembersofstaffhavesupportedourjourneybyintegratingtheprojectintotheirclassroomcurriculum.ThiswasachievedthroughResearchingtheWurundjerithoroughlyandimmersingstudentsineveryaspectofthestudyusingresourcesatourdisposalincludinginformationtechnologyandliterature.Outsideresourcessuchasguestspeakersotherpeersandlocalcommunityrepresentativesalsoprovidedvaluableinput.OurlibrarianRobynSunbergstudiedtheenvironmentalcultureoftheWurundjeripeople.Studentscreatedvisualandwrittenreectionsoftheirunderstandingsthroughclassroomstudiesimagemakingintheformofpaintingslinedrawingsprintmakingand3Dmaterials.TheywereintroducedtothelanguageoftheWurundjeripeopletheirhistorylocalsymbolsandstorylines.Classroomteachersbecameinvolvedinintegratingtheprojectintotheircurriculum.Allstaffstudentsandparentshaveparticipated.ThestudentscarvedthecreaturesandsymbolicpatternworkandusedthelanguageoftheWurundjeriontheirtiles.TheparentstilesrepresentedtheWurundjeripatternsandsurroundedthewrittenexcerptsthattravelalongthespineoftheserpent.Theteacherscarvedtilesfortheheadusingonlythepatternsofthetribe.Mindinowsitsproudlyinourlandscapeandhasbeenanenrichingexperienceforusallandapermanentlearningopportunityforallwhoviewher.JeanetteJenningsArtTeacherCareyBaptistGrammarSchoolDonvalewww.zartart.com.au4collaborativemural ArtthatcanbeanywhereIhavenoticedinmyteachingpracticeoverrecentyearsthatstudentsareincreasinglyusingtheirsmartphonestorecordthedevelopmentoftheirartisticprocess.Ourstudentshaveintheirpocketapowerfulandportabledevicethatallowsthemtospontaneouslyshootphotographsatanytimeandinanyplace.Socialmediaisallowingthemtoinstantlyexhibittheirartworktoaworldwideaudience.IwantedmyYear10studentstofullyutilisetheopportunitiesformakingartworksandsourcinginspirationfromtheworldaroundthemandsoIdevelopedaphotographyprojectwhichharnessedtheaccessibilityofsmartphonetechnology.Thisprojectwascreatedinassociationwithmystudentteacherwhowasabletogivemetheperspectiveofadigitalnative.i.e.apersonbornaftertheintroductionofdigitaltechnologiesandthroughinteractingwithdigitaltechnologyfromanearlyagehasagreaterunderstandingofitsconceptsThestudentsbeganbyresearchingandanalysingarangeofphotographscreatedusingsmartphonesandotherdigitaldevices.Theytrialledarangeofsmartphonephotographyapplicationswhichallowedthemtosimulatevariouslmtypesframeslightinglensesandotherphotographyeffects.Oneofthemorepopularsocialmediaphotographyappswasfoundtoproduceimagesofaverylowqualitywhichweredesignedtobeviewedonscreenbutwerenotappropriateforprinting.Thereareliterallythousandsofappsavailableandthestudentsenjoyedsharinganddemonstratingtheirfavouritestotheclass.Theythenbrainstormedconceptsfortheirphotographypresentation.Theobjectivewastocreateaseriesofninerelatedimageswhichexploredathemefromtheworldaroundthem.WelookedatthephotomontagesofDavidHockneyandtalkedaboutthepossibilitiesforfragmentationofimagesshowingdifferentviewpointsofthesameobjectandfortellingastory.ThebookTheArtofiPhoneographybyStephanieCalabreseRobertswasaninvaluableresource.Oncethestudentshaddecidedonthemestheyshotawiderangeofimagesusingboththesmartphonecameraandthroughapps.Theythenprintedacontactsheetandcarefullyexaminedtheirimages.Aseriesofnineimageswereselectedandevaluated.Somestudentsthenwentbackintoappstoedittheimagesfurtherandusemoreltersframesorvintageeffects.ThenalnineimageswerethenimportedintothecomputerandopenedusingAdobePhotoshop.Anyfurthereditingwasdoneatthispointandthentheimageswerearrangedina3x3grid.ThiswasanopportunitytolearnaboutlayersinPhotoshopandtoexperimentwithbackgroundcolourstexturesandgradients.Thenishedimageswerethenprintedmounteddisplayedandevaluated.AssessmentforthistaskfocussedonthestudentscompetenceinreachingtheDraftAustralianCurriculumAchievementStandardforTheArtsinYears9and10.FactorsincludedConceptualisingideasintheirartmakingbrainstormingresearch.DemonstratingrenedskillsinmanipulatingmaterialstechniquesandprocessescomposingimagesshootingeditingapplicationsPhotoshopprintingmounting.Discussingcharacteristicsandconstraintsidentiedintheprocessofartmakingcontactprintscreenshotsselectionandevaluation.Reectingonanddiscussingthedevelopmentofapersonalaestheticmakingcriticalcomparisonstotheworkofothersresearchbrainstormingevaluation.Theresultingartworksweresurprisingintheirdiversityoftechniqueandapproach.Manyartworkshadamarvellousnarrativequalitysomewerealmostcubistinappearanceotherswerequirkyandfunnyandverypersonal.Allofthesestudentshaveproudlyuploadedtheirworktosocialmediafortheworldtoseeandtolike.SallyThompsonThePeninsulaSchoolEllaChapmanMonashUniversityThestudentsatThePeninsulaSchoolinMtElizausetheirsmartphonesasatoolintheartroom.SallyThompsontheirartteacherexplainshowthiswasimplemented.5ZartExtra_Term12014artintheenvironment LegacyProjectEachyearthegraduatingclassofGrade6satTemplestoweParkPrimarySchoolworkonaLegacyproject.Thestudentsleavebehindamajorartworktobeenjoyedbytheschoolcommunityaftertheyhavemovedontosecondaryeducation.Wewantedtomakethe2013Legacyourbiggestandbesttohaveacollaborativepiecethatmadearealstatementwithacontemporaryfocus.ThestudentsandIdecidedthatitwouldbereallyfuntopaintonskateboarddecksandtocreateasculpture.EarlierthisyearIparticipatedinaStreetArtProfessionalLearningdayatZart.Iadoptedmanyoftheideasgleanedfromthisdayintoour2013legacyproject.ThestudentswereintroducedtoStreetArtPublicArtandGraftiwithaPowerPointpresentation.TwoquestionswereaskedofthestudentsduringthepresentationWhatdoyounoticeWhatquestionsdoyouhaveInterestingpointswereraisedfromtheimagespresented.ThestudentshadmanyopinionsontheStreetArtimagesshown.AdrianDoylesmodicationtoRutledgeLanewhichoccurredduringthemiddleofourprojectwasonepointofdiscussion.Weexploredlegalversusillegalanddiscussedthedifferencesbetweentaggingandpieces.DifferentformsofStreetArtincludingfreeformsprayingstencilartpasteupstiledpiecesandthreedimensionalpieceswereexamined.ManyimagesofStreetArtfromAustraliaandaroundtheworldwerediscussedincludingpiecesbyBanksyVextaSpaceInvaderElkSixteentonameafew.Thestudentsdrewinspirationfromthesestreetartistsandasaresultdecidedtousetheirowninitialsasthebasisfortheirdesign.Inordertomakepiecesmorepersonalstudentsalsodesignedandincorporatedacharacterrelatedtotheirinterests.Theytransferredtheirbestdesignontoatemplateanddecidedonthecoloursfortheirnishedpiece.WeappliedforandreceivedaLeaderNewspaperLocalGrantof1000whichenabledustospendmoreonmaterials.Ironlakspraypaintwaschosenforthebackgroundsduetotheamazingvibrantcoloursandtheexcellentcoverageitprovides.Wedidntprimetheskateboarddecksandspentasessionoutsidesprayingthebackgroundcoloursstraightontotheboards.Thestudentsreallyenjoyedusingthespraypaintandmanyofthemmadenoteofitintheirprojectevaluations.Somestudentswereconservativesprayingwithonecolourhoweverotherschosetohavedrippedormulticolouredbackgroundswhateverwasappropriatetotheirdesign.Oncethebackgroundshaddriedstudentstransferredtheirdesignsontotheboardswithchalk.Vipondpaintswerethenusedtopaintoverthespraypaint.Thestudentshaveonesessionofartperweekwhichenabledplentyofdryingtimebetweensessionswithmostdoingatleasttwocoatsofpaintontheirboards.Poscamarkerswereusedtoadddetailtothedesigns.Atthetimeofwritingtheboardsarenishedandlookabsolutelyamazing.TheGrade6saresoproudoftheirachievementsandtherestoftheschoolnowwanttopaintonskateboardsastheirLegacyprojectNicoleSumnerVisualArtTeacherTemplestoweParkPrimarySchoolwww.zartart.com.au6graduation SchoolGroundSculpturesInspirationcamefromvariousexamplesincludingtheworksofPatrickDoughertyVietnameseshingboatsandtheEiffelTower.Throughdiscussionwithourstudentswecreatedalistofpossiblematerialsthatwouldbeallowedwithintheirartworkssticksseedpodsbarkleavesdriedowersjutestringbrownpapercalicoandgourds.Alloftheseitemscouldbesourcedlocallyorfromourexistingartsupplies.ThegourdsweredonatedbyenthusiasticgardenerandretiredteacherJuneKortman.Theuseofgourdswasntinouroriginalplanningitwasthestudentswhosuggestedusingthem.Thisledtofurtherdiscussionontheuseofgourdsinvariousculturesandtheopportunityforustogrowourownfromtheseedswecollectedwhencuttingthemopen.Studentsbegandrawingtheirdesignsandthecallwentouttoalltogathersticksfromtheschoolyard.Thecaretakerwasquitehappytoseestudentscollectingsticksandtidyingupthegroundsintheprocess.Severalteamsofeageryoungerstudentswouldregularlydropoffthetreasuretheyhadfoundforuswithpilesofsticksthoughtfullydepositedontheartroomdoormatbecomingcommonplace.SurprisinglyweranshortofsticksbutwithaplentifulsupplytohandattheircampusinaruralsettingourHavenstudentswerehappytoobligeinbringingtheirownontheirweeklybustriptothemaincampus.Armedwithinspirationcreativityandanartroomfullofsticksstudentsbegantheirconstructionandencounteredtheirrsthurdlebindingstickswithstring.YesthatmeanttyingknotsFormanystudentsthisalonepresentedahugechallengeastheyhadgrownaccustomedtothewondersofSupertachotglueandmaskingtape.Wholeclassandindividualinstructionwasgivenforsimpleknot-tying.Thisartworkprojectinvolvedindividualfocusteamworkmanydesignchangesandlotsofspontaneouscreativeair.Thestudentsproblem-solvingenabledthemtoovercomethelimitationsimposedbythematerialstosuccessfullytransformtheirartisticvisionsintoreality.Itprovedtobeatrulyworthwhileventurenotonlyfromtheperspectiveoftheyoungartiststhemselvesbutalsoreectedinthelevelofpositivecommunityfeedbackintheeyesofmanyothers.MichelleWatsonFionaRyanVisualArtTeachersHorshamWestHavenPrimarySchoolItbeganasinspirationgainedfromavisittoanartgalleryintheseasidetownofRobewhereIadmiredaboatcreatedfromdriftwoodandstring.Thejourneyintheartroomhowevercarvedoutapathofitsownthankstothecreativityandenthusiasmofourstudents.Livinginlandagreatdistancefromanydriftwoodnecessitatedanalternativesourceofwood.AwindyJanuarydaycametoourrescueresultinginplentyoffreeartsuppliesintheformoftwigsandsticksstrewnacrosstheschoolyard.WebeganbyintroducingourYears5and6studentstotheirrstartbriefsculptureconstructionusingnaturalresources.Thestudentswereabletoworkinsmallgroupsorindependentlytocreateapieceofartthatwasfree-standingorabletooat.StudentsfromHorshamWestHavenPrimarySchoolcreatedtrulyamazingworksofartfromnaturalmaterialscollectedintheirschoolgrounds.7ZartExtra_Term12014exploration
