TheGreenSchoolisaprivatesecularnon-protschoolofferingacurriculumtaughtinEnglish.ItislocatedinaruralcommunityinBaliIndonesiaandprovideseducationforaninternationalpopulationofapproximately300studentsfrom45countrieswithascholarshipprogramtosupportlocalchildrenwhowanttoattend.ThecampusissetontheAyungRiverwhosewatershelpgeneratesomeoftheelectricityusedbytheschoolandsurroundingcommunitieswithotherdailyenergyneedsenhancedbyasolarprogram.Itsextraordinarybamboostructuresriseupfromthejungleoorprovidinganeducationsettingofunparalleledbeautyandcharmwhereeachclassroomissurroundedbyorganicgardensthatprovidemanyofthefoodrequirementsfortheschoolcommunity.Thebuildingsarebasedonwall-lessarchitecturalconstructsinbamboowhichspiraltomajesticheightsshowcasingthecomplexityoftraditionalBalinesebuildingtechniquesusingnaturalmaterials.AwardedtheGreenestSchoolonEarthin2012bytheUSGBCCentreforGreenSchoolsTheGreenSchoolaimstoleadgloballyinitsadvocacyforpromotingtheimportanceofenvironmentalcustodianshipandsustainabilityineducation.NowinitsfourthyearwiththecurriculumimplementedfromPre-KtoGrade12holisticandexperientiallearningisembeddedacrossallgradelevelsandincorporatedindailythematiclessonsinthePrimaryandMiddleSchoolsenhancedbyexplicitsubjectbasedteachingandlearningthroughavarietyofpedagogicallinks.ThevisualartsareourishingwithinthisidyllicsettingandthisyearwehaveestablishedTheBambooGalleryandalocalandinternationalartistinresidenceprogramtoaddtothecreativeandculturalexperiencesofstudents.InthePrimaryandMiddleSchoolsthecurriculumfocusmakesspeciclinkstoclassroomlearningwhichembracesenvironmentalstudiesandthestudyofBalinesecultureinthecontextofthelocalenvironment.WithstudentcenteredlearningakeyfocusoftheoverallschoolcurriculumthisisdenedforstudentsintheHighSchoolGrades9-12withmultiplelevelsinoneclassasaselfselectedlearningpathway.Anextensiverangeofmodulesrotatingonaveweekcycleareofferedgivingstudentstheopportunitytodesignawell-balancedlearningexperiencewhichisconducivetotheirstrengthsandpersonalpreferences.Therearecurrently21visualartssubjectspresentedinthemoduleprolesallowinginterestedstudentstoaccumulatepointsfortheirGreenSchoolDiplomawithavisualartsbias.ModulesrepresentedrangefromsubjectssuchasStyleIt-RealismStyleIt-AbstractionDigitizeYourWorldJunktoFunkStunningSculptureDynamicDiariesandEnvironmentalArt.ThesearecomplementedbyanongoingfocusonPortfolioDevelopmentwhichissequentialthroughouttheyear.Thevisualartscurriculumspecicallybolsterstheskillsofobservationinresponsetothenaturalworld.Itstrengthensthecapacityforstudentstocondentlyconsidernewpossibilitiesintheirinterpretativeprocesseswithreferencetotheimportanceofaestheticsandenvironmentalissuesintheirlives.Italsonurturesacreativelearningplatformwhichinspiresvisualandintellectualcuriosityandpromotesculturalsensitivityandunderstandingasintrinsictocreativethinkingandworkingpractices.WorkinginthestudioenvironmentinTheHeartofSchoolaswellasintheclassroomsvisualartsstudentsarepresentedwithmanyopportunitiestoexploretheirideas.Ideasinspiredbynewmaterialsandtechniquesincludingworkingwithnaturalrecycledandrepurposedmaterialsthattransformmeaningandvisualorientationintheirimagery.StudentslivesatTheGreenSchoolareenrichedbyteachingandlearningwhichplacesemphasisontheimportanceoftheindividualwithinacollectivevision.Allclassescontributetoarangeofprojectswhichhaveapositiveimpactthroughenvironmentalactioninandbeyondtheschoolcommunity.Theyalsocollaboratewithlocalcommunitiesinavarietyofexperientialprogramswhichtargetawarenessandconsciousnessraisingwithspecicwaystopromoteenvironmentalsustainability.MargotAnwarVisualArtsSpecialistTheGreenSchoolBaliIndonesiathegreenschoolwww.zartart.com.au6teachingvisualartsinbali TheYear9ArtstudentsatTrinityCollegeBlakeviewSAwereintroducedtostreetartandresearchedanartistthatappealedtothem.TheycreatedaminiartworkinthestyleofthatartistinpreparationforourartistinresidenceJoshuaSmith.Asapartofthecommunitybuildingaspectoftheprojectthestudentswererequiredtoinformthepublicandcommunityabouttheirintendedwork.Somemembersofthecommunitydeemaerosolartasgraftisobeforecommencingthisprojectthestudentsneededtoreachasmanypeopleaspossibletoinformandeducatethem.CommencetheirlifelongjourneytobecomingsociallyawarecitizensandbegintodevelopamoralresponsibilityfortheirlocalareaThestudentstravelledtoSandringhamNursingHometoworkalongsidetheresidentsanddiscussedtheirprojectwiththem.Whilethestudentswerealittlenervousatrsteverystudentthoroughlyenjoyedtheexperience.Allthestudentswereabletospeakclearlyandcondentlywiththeresidentstoexplaintheartactivitytheyhadplanned.Thefollowingweekthestudentscontinuedbrainstormingandresearchingotherpublicartprojectsthatalreadyexistedanddecidedonelementstheywishedtoinclude.WiththethemeofTheBeautyofaDiverseCommunitythestudentsdecidedthattheywantedtheguresintheirdesigntobeanonymoussothatanymemberofthecommunitycouldconnectwiththepiece.ExploringabstractconceptsassociatedwithStencilArtThestudentsdecidedtofocusonthedemographicofthePlayfordareaandfocusedonagegroupsprofessionsandculturalgroups.InweekthreewhenJoshuaSmitharrivedtheyworkedtogethertodesigntheirnalimagewhichwassubmittedtocouncilfornalapproval.Theinitialresponsewaspositivefromthecouncil.Thenextweekthestudentsbroughtinpropsandaskedmembersofthecommunitytoposefortheirshots.JoshuaSmithtaughtthestudentshowtotakethephotographsensuringthattheangleTheBeautyofaDiverseCommunitywascorrectforthedesign.WiththephotographstakenJoshuaassistedbypreparingtheirimagesforthenextstageusingIllustrator.Thestudentsthenbegancuttingandpreparingstencils.Initiallyitwasintendedthatthestudentswouldworkontheirownimage.Howeverthestudentsplayedtotheirstrengthsandthosewhounderstoodthelayeringconceptwerekeyintheinitialdrawingoutofeachlayer.Otherstudentswatchedandlearntduringthisprocesswhiletheothersbegancuttinglayersthusdevelopingnewskillsinstencilart.ThestudentsnotonlyworkedwithcommitmentduringtheirlessonswhileJoshuawaspresenttheyalsoworkedwithdeterminationduringtheirlunchhoursandafterschooltoensurethelayerswerecutintimeforweekeight.Oneissuenotconsideredpriortoplanningtheprojectwasthatinitiallysomestudentsraisedconcernsaboutputtingtheirworkinthepublicdomain.Somelackedcondenceindoingthisandhadcommentedthatpreviouslytheyhadonlycreatedworkessentiallyforthemselvesandnooneelsewouldeverseetheirwork.Howeveraprojectsuchasthiswasrichwithcollaborationandeachstudentreliedonandsupportedeachothertoensuretheirworkwasasuccess.Totheircredittheypushedthroughthisnervousnessandbegantheenjoyabletaskofsprayingtheirstencils.Duringweekeightthestudentswerereadytocompletetheirdesign.Theyweretaughtaboutthesafetyimplicationsofsprayingandwererequiredtowearsafetygear.Thestudentsworkedwithcommitmentanddeterminationthroughouttheentirethreedaysofspraying.Themajorityofthecommunityandschoolwerelargelysupportive.Theysawthevalueoftheprojectprovidingstudentswithopportunitiestoexperienceanddeveloplifelongskillswhichwereeffectivelytaughtoutsideoftheclassroom.ResiliencedeterminationcommitmentperseverancecriticalandcreativethinkingcollaborationByKylieNeagleTrinityCollege7ZartExtra_Term12013artinthecommunity In2011ourschoolwassuccessfulwiththeapplicationforanArtistinSchoolsfundinggrantthroughArtsVictoria.Thisprogramallowedustohaveaprofessionalartistworkingwithourstudentsfor20days.OurschoolwasextremelyfortunatetobeteamedupwithartistSoniaTomasiello.Soniacreateda9weekunitofworksuitableforouryear7and8studentsthatwasrunthroughoutTerms2and3.ThisenabledSoniatoworkwith4classesoverthe20daysshewasworkinginourschool.BeforeSoniaarrivedwetookblackandwhitephotographsofthestudentsbothfront-onandproleandhadthemblownuptoA4sizereadyfortheirrstclass.Soniaengagedourstudentsinthreedifferentarttechniquesmono-printingstencilingandpapercuttingusingtheseselfportraitsasabaseforthisunitofwork.ThestudentswerealsointroducedtoavarietyofStreetArtiststhroughvideoclipsanddiscussionwhilstSoniaexplaineddifferenttechniquesthattheseartistsusedsuchaswheatpaste.WeallenjoyedhavingSoniaworkinginourschoolsheinuencedandinspireduswithherteachingtechniques.AlthoughwewerefamiliarwiththemediumsthroughSoniasexperienceandexpertiseintheeldofprintmakingwelearntalotofvaluabletipsandtricks.Theseincludedsuchsimplethingsasattachingapieceofpaperwithmaskingtapetothebackofthemono-printdesignsothatthestudentscouldusethesameimageagainonbetterqualitypaper.Thestudentsenjoyedthestencilingtaskespeciallythespraypaintingandpapercuttingtaskandalthoughthesetaskswerequitechallengingforthemtheyremainedenthusiasticengagedandexperiencedsuccess.OncethestudentshadmasteredthethreetechniquesbycompletingthreedesignsusingtheirselfportraitstheyweretheneachgivenanA4orA3sizedpieceofMDFboard.Wehadsourcedpre-cutboardsfromResourceRescueOnthisboardtheywereaskedtocreateacompositionusingsomeorallofthetechniquestheyhadjustexperienced.Soniaalsoprovidedthemwithaselectionofbothcolouredandpatternedpapersthattheycouldincorporateintotheirdesigns.Oncecompletedtheseboardswereusedtocreateamuralinourartsgarden.TheywerecoatedwithanepoxyresinforwaterproongPaperCutPortraitswww.zartart.com.au8artistsinschoolprogramme Sometimesbeingaspecialistteacherinaprimaryschoolcanbealonelyexistence.ButthatchangedforMandarinteacherBeckHickmanandmewhenwedecidedtocreateamuralinspiredbyChinachildrenandplay.WewantedtodosomethingbigsomethinggrandsomethingtoacknowledgeandcelebratetheChineseculture.AsIhadcompletedfunandinspiringZartcourseswithPamIrvingandJaneByrnewedecidedanoutdoormosaicwasthewaytogo.FortunatelyforusZarthadasimilarPDearlylastyearwhichwebothattendedandfromthatpointon-armedwithawealthofideasandnewskills-wewereaforcetobereckonedwith.GOODMORNINGCHINABeckhadoftenreadtostudentsGoodMorningChinaapicturestorybookbyHuYongYidetailingtheactivitiesChinesechildrentakepartinbeforeattendingschool.ChildrenatElsternwickPrimaryhadalwaysrespondedwelltothisbeautifulbooksowedecidedtouseitasourinspiration.StudentsinGrade5and6studiedthestyleofillustrationsusedinthebookastheyweregoingtorecreatethechildreninclayforthefocalpartofthemosaic.Wewantedtoensuresomeformofconsistency.WealsolookedatotherimagesofchildreninChina-ruggedupinlayersofclothingtoprotectthemfromtheharshwinters-astheseillustrationswereverysimilartothoseinGoodMorningChina.StudentsinGrade3and4createdadditionalceramicpiecessuchaslanternsbarkleavesshandlilypads.Originallywewantedtousethreelargepanelsbutbasedonadvicefromparentsweoptedforninesmallerpanelswhichwouldbeeasiertoattachtothe100yearoldbrickwall.OnceweplacedandarrangedthestudentsworkontheninepanelsBeckandIwiththehelpofanotherstaffmemberDanielleLooneypainstakinglycompletedthebackgroundtothechildrensworkwithceramictiles.Ourmuralwasnottheworkofanartistinresidencebutthecollaborationofanumberofdedicatedpeoplefromourschool.Ittookanentireyeartoplanandconstructourmuralwhichincludedlatenightsafterworkandcountlesshoursovermanyweekends.Whilstitsoundslikeanincrediblylaborioustaskneveroncedidwefeellikeitwaswecouldseethemuraltakingshapewitheverytileweplacedwhichmotivatedusfurther.Toaccomplishsuchalargescaleworkofartsheerdeterminationandapassionformosaicconstructionwasamust.NowasthemembersofourschoolcommunityarriveeachdaytheyaregreetedbythemosaicGoodMorningChinailluminatedbythesunrisingintheeast.ThisworkaddslifeandcolourtotheschoolyardhighlightsthestudentsachievementsinartandillustratestherichChineseculturethatisembeddedintheschoolcommunityofElsternwickPrimary.LindaTaylorVisualArtsTeacherElsternwickPrimarySchool3ZartExtra_Term42013artsproject
