TheInterlinkprogramprovidesplannedactivitiesforadultswithintellectualdisabilities.TheprogramisrunbyRangesCommunityHealthServicesandheldatKallistaCommunityHouse.Theprogramaimstoprovideanopportunityforparticipantstointeractanddeveloptheirindividualphysicalemotionalsocialandintellectualpotentialandfurthertheirindependence.ItisalsoanopportunitytoengagewiththeCommunity.WeprovideavariedprogrambutasourclientsareparticularlygoodatArtCraftwedolotsofartprojectsandgaingreatideasfromourschoolholidaytripstoZartArtandourvisitstotheZartArtStudentgallery.LastyearwebecameawareoftheHillsCommunityGardensinCockatooandtheSensorygardentheywereplanningandwewereinvitedtodecorateeightbollardswhichwouldformtheentrancetotheirnewsensorygarden.CaseyCardiniaCommunityHealthareinvolvedwiththeCommunityGardensandprovideduswithcoordinationandsupportthroughouttheproject.TheCommunityGardenscommitteeprovidedthetreatedpinebollardsandsomeofthepaintandhadthemdeliveredtousatKallistaCommunityhouse.ForthedesignweusedtheanimalsfromtheArtyAnimalOutlinesbookwhichwepurchasedfromZart.Weaddedarivermountainstreefernsandgumtreestoreectthewildlifeandlandscapeinthehills.Thecolourswerechosenoutoftheleftoveroutdoorpaintwhichpeopledonatedfortheprojectandhighlightedbyafewbrightcolourswhichwepurchased.Weundercoatedtheminwhitefencepaintandleftthebottomthirdblankasthispartwouldendupintheground.Thenwedrewthedesignonusinganepointmarkerpen.Theeightbollardswerelaidoutontablessothateachclientwasabletochooseasectiontopaintwithouthavingtoleantoofaroverthem.Asthepatternonthebollardsmatchedsomepartsofthebackgroundwereeasiertodoaspaintbynumbers.Someofthecoloursweremixedandthenlabelledtoindicatewheretheywereusedi.e.Mountaingreengrassgreenetc.Originallywehaddecidedtodoasimilardesignonthebackincludingarainbowbutasthefronttooksolongtodowedecidedtodosomethingsimplerontheback.WekepttherainbowthendidahandoutlineforeachEngagingwiththeCommunityclienttodecoratethemselvesandusedanalphabetstencilsowecouldincludeallthenamesofthosewhocontributedtotheartwork.AsGraftipaintisnecessaryandexpensivetobuytheCommunityGardenscommitteepurchasedthepaintandpaintedthemforus.TheinstallationwasundertakenbyvolunteersfromtheGreenCorpprogram.OnWednesdaythe29thofJune2011theCommunityGardenshostedathankyoulunchforourgroupanditwasexcitingforourclientstoseetheirhardworkinsitu.AngelaFergusonRangesCommunityHealthService3ZartExtra_Term120123interlinkcommunityproject ThisartprojectofferedvaluableeducationsessionsprovidingadiverseapproachtothestudyofAsianCulture.2010wasanexcitingyearforDoncasterGardensPrimarySchool.WewerefortunateenoughtoreceiveagrantfromtheNationalAsiaLanguagesandStudiesinSchoolsProgramNALSSP.ItenabledustofullourdreamofbuildinganEndangeredAsianAnimalSanctuaryinourschoolscourtyardasaspecialyearveprojectin2011.StudentswereencouragedtobecomeindependentlearnersapplyingtheirindividualstrengthsideasandstrategiestoinquireaboutChinaanditsendangeredanimals.TheAsianExposhowcasedthestudentsdepthofknowledgeaboutAsia.ItreectedtheireffortsandlearningoutcomesfromtheirresearchintothehistorylanguageethnicgroupspopulationandcurrencyofanAsiancountry.TheartcomponentofthisprojectbeganintermoneanditsequentiallyowedintotermstwoandthreeoftheVisualArtprogram.ThesculpturesoftheChineseVillageandthecollectionsofanimalsnowresidingatDoncasterGardensPrimarySchoolscourtyardhavegeneratedlife-likeresourcesthatAnEndangeredAsianAnimalSanctuaryinCeramicsfocusonChinaandtheenvironmentofitsendangeredanimals.ThisendangeredanimalsanctuaryandChinesevillagehasalsocreatedaresourceforfuturesustainabilitystudiesinotherlearningareassuchasliteraturemathsgeographyhistoryenvironmentandinquirylearning.TheprojecthasincreasedthechildrensawarenessoftheendangeredanimalsinChinaandenrichedtheirknowledgeaboutthehistorycultureandcustomsofChina.TheprojectalsodevelopedasolidfoundationtocomplementourStudiesofAsiainthecurriculumwhichispartofourcommitmenttoBecomingAsiaLiterateSchoolforthe21stcentury.TheminiaturedisplayofatraditionalChineseVillageandthecollectionofChinasendangeredanimalsemphasizetheimportanceofconservationofanimalsandtheirhabitatlookingatChinaasanexample.Ithasmadestudentsawareoftheactionsandthestepsthattheycantaketoassistthecausewhichcanincludethefoodtheypurchaseatthecanteenandatthesupermarket.Forexampletheycanavoidproductsmadewithpalmoilbecauseitsproductionaffectstheorangutansandtheirhabitats.ThemajorhighlightofthisprojectwasgivingthestudentsanexcellentopportunitytoworkwithexperiencedartistJaneAnnoiswhospecialisesinceramics.Thisprovidedthemsomespecialskillsinworkingwithclayandlearningthetechniqueofconstructingsculpturesinaminiaturesizewasachallengetothem.Thespecialtechniquesofapplyingpainttothesculpturestocreatethedesiredcolourandtoneswerealsoacquiredbythestudents.TheprojecthasbroadenedandenrichedthestudentsknowledgeandawarenessaboutChinasendangeredanimalsandtheirenvironment.Learningoutcomesweredemonstratedthroughtheirresearchandthenalproductsofceramicanimalstemplesandtiles.Ibelievethatwehavemorethanachievedourobjectivesinthisprojectanditwasverysatisfyingtoseethestudentsexpressingenjoymentastheprojectprogressedandparentstakinganinterestandvaluingtheirchildrensachievementsfromdoingthisproject.GraceCheungVisualArtTeacherDoncasterGardensPrimarySchoolwww.zartart.com.au4studiesofasia FromtheArtsFestivalatBoxHillNorthPrimarySchool2011ThestudentsatBoxHillNorthPrimarySchoolandKindergartenshowcasedtheirskillsandcreativetalentsintheVisualandPerformingArtsduringaweeklongexhibition.ItwaslaunchedwithanexcitingOpeningCeremonywherethestudentssteppedintocharacteraslivingstatuesplayedmusicalinstrumentsandperformedoriginaldancesforthewholeschoolcommunity.TheGalleryopenedthateveningallowingparentsandfriendsthechancetoenjoythemanyartworksondisplaypiecesthathadtakenallyeartocreate.Duringthatweekadditionalactivitieskeptthestudentsengaged.AnexcitingopportunitysawtheadditionofweathermanDavidBrownlmingSaturdaynightsweatherreportfromtheGallerywhilstthestudentswereworkingontwospecialprojectsusingonlyrecycledmaterialsandequipment.ThestudentsfromyearsthreetosixworkedtogetherpaintinganddecoratingplasticbottlestomaketheHangingGardensofBoxHillNorthPSwhilethoseintheyoungerclassesstylizedbrownpaperlunchbagstocreateanewskinforArthurthegiantlizard.ArthurwascreatedinresponsetothestoryArtMaxwrittenandillustratedbyDavidWiesnerataleabouttworeptilefriendsexploringtheworldofpaintingSoArthurcametolifehewasconstructedbytwoGrade6studentsshapingandjoiningPahangCanewithGafferTapetomakehisskeleton.WhenwelookedatthehugepileofbrownpaperbagsleftoverfromtheschoollunchesmadebyMissPeppercornthemakingofArthursskinandscalesbecameclearlyobviousBypaintingandoverlappingthesebagsthengluingthemontotheframeweveryquicklycreatedArthursdoubleOnthemorningofthewholeschoolsvisualartsprogramallthestudentsinthePrepclassesspongeddifferentshadesofbrownpaintsontothebagsexperimentingwithavarietyofpatternsandshapes.AtthesametimethestudentsinGrades1and2usedltersandstampprintedpaintsontotheirpaperbagsproducingverycolourfuldesigns.DuringtheopenafternoonwhilstparentsandfriendswanderedthroughthegallerytheypausedtowatchasmallgroupofstudentslayeringandgluingthescalesonArthursskeleton.OnthebackofArthurthebrownbagswereattachedsothathelookedlikehimselfbrownishscalyandrealistic.HistummyontheotherhandwasanexplosionofcolourwhereMaxhadsplatteredhimwithamyriadofcolouredpaintsArthurhadachangeofheartafterhiscrazyexperienceswithhisfriendMax.HewasveryhappytojoinhisfriendandcontinuetheirjourneytogetherArthursfacemadewitheggcartonsshowsgreatpleasure.HecanbeseenbattinghisfringedbrownpaperbageyelasheswithprideThestaffandstudentsatBoxHillNorthPrimarySchoolareparticularlyfocusedonsustainabilityasamajorpartoftheschoolscharter.TheGreenTeamiscontinuallyworkingtowardsfurtherreducingtheamountofwasteproductsandenergyandrecyclingawiderangeofleftovermaterials.TheFestivalculminatedwithaspectacularmusicalperformancetoalargeparentaudiencewhereArthurmadehisrstpublicappearance.MicheleFreeland-SmallVisualArtsCoordinatorBoxHillNorthPrimarySchool5ZartExtra_Term12012artsfestivalArthurTHESTORYOF
