WhenitwasdecidedatSacreCoeurthattheJuniorSchoolArtShowwouldcoincidewiththeFrenchVillageFairinOctoberIknewexactlywhatpathmyPrep-6VisualArtProgramwouldfollowthisyear.IdecidedonaCircusCarnivalthemefocusinginparticularonClowns.ThethemewouldalsobelinkedtotheJuniorSchoolMusicalinTerm2whichwastitledVaudeville.AsIwasresponsibleforthepropsforthisproductionImadesurethatIwouldbeabletousetheartworkandrecyclesomeofthepropsfortheArtShow.WewerealsofortunatetoreceiveagrantthroughArtsVictoriaArtistsinSchoolsProgramandouraimwastolinkthiswithVisualArt.Film-makerGreggBrownspentapproximately14sessionsduringTerms23workingwithYear5studentstocreateananimationtitledBack-ipsandButteries.ThisprojectwassuccessfullyincorporatedintoourArtShowthemewiththestudentscreatingavarietyofcircuscharactersandpropsforthelm.IntheArtRoomthestudentsfromalllevelswereimmersedinresearchanddiscussionsoftheirexperiencesofthethemeandtheywereencouragedtoexperimentwithavarietyofmaterialsandtechniques.ItwasamazingtoseethediversityandrangeofresponsestoasimilarsubjectandwhenalloftheartworkwasnallyassembledtheskilldevelopmentfromPrep-6wasobvious.Thestudentsreallyusedtheirexperiencesknowledgeandimaginationtocreatesomeamazing2Dand3Dartworkthroughouttheyear.Eachlevelwasintroducedtoarangeoftasksincludingavarietyofspecicpaintingtechniquesprint-makingpapiermacheconstructionceramicsmaskmakingtextilesandvariouscollagetechniques.ThePrepstudentscreatedclayclownsonsticksandmixedmediaice-creams.ThestudentsfromYears12ALLTHEFUNOFTHEFAIRmodelledthemostwonderfulglazedceramicclownsandcreateddesignershow-bags.Thedelightful3DCarouselHorsesthatformedthecentre-pointofthedisplayweretheworkoftheYear34students.Theywerealsoresponsiblefordesigningandcreatingthelife-sizeclownpuppets.Year5studentswereinvolvedintheAnimationProjectformuchofTerms23soIdecidedtogivethemaninterestingtaskthatcouldbecompletedoutsidetheArtRoom.Theirtaskwastodesigndraftandcompletealong-stitchtapestryofaclown.AnumberoftasksrangingfromdesigningandcreatingcarnivalcharactermaskstomeetingthechallengeofpaintingMovingPicturesanddepictinganimageofwhatcouldbeseenwhilePeepingUnderaCircusTentreallykepttheYear6studentsthinkingoutsidethesquare.Thestudentscouldonlyshowaportionofanactandtheviewerhadtobeabletoimaginetherest.OurYear6studentswereinvolvedintheStonningtonCouncilandDuldigMuseuminitiativeClayforKidsworkshopsduringTerm3.WeusedtheArtShowthemeasthefocusfortheceramicsculpturesthatwereproducedduringtheworkshops.ThestudentscreatedclownsferriswheelsandvariouscircuscharactersthatwereaperfectadditiontotheArtShow.TheArtShowwascertainlyagreatsuccessandshowcasedtheenormoustalentofourwonderfulartists.SusanMcDonaldVisualArtTeacherSacreCoeurPREPGRADEFOURGRADEONEGRADETWOGRADETHREEGRADEFIVEGRADESIXwww.zartart.com.au6SkillDevelopment EachyearthetallpinenexttotheArtStudioishometoafamilyofmagpies.Ihavewatchedastheyreartheiryoungtaketheirrstyinglessonsandscavengethroughtheremainsofrecessandlunchdiscardedbytheboys.Thequietoftheschoolyardandabundanceofcrumbsprovideaperfectenvironmentforthemagpiestoliveandraisetheiryoung.OnTuesdayafternoonsIwouldcollecttheprepclassandwalkthroughtheoutdoorchessareaundertheshadeofthepinetotheArtStudio.Theboyshadnoticedthemagpiesonmanyoccasionsandweoftenchattedaboutthemonthewaytoclass.Thispromptedmetocreateaunitofworkbasedaroundthefamilyofmagpiesinourschool.Iwantedtointegratethevisualandkinestheticprocessesofartwiththeboysverbalobservationsbygivingchildrenachancetocreatenotonlywithwordsbutalsowithpaintingandsculpture.Iaimedtocelebratethevalueofvisualandkinestheticlearningalongsidetheverbalandwritten.LastyearsprepboyswereveryfondofPamelaAllenstorybooksandourTeacherLibrarianhadfoundformeherbookWaddleGiggleGargleWhichisadelightfulstoryonboisterousmagpies.Thisgavemeagreatstartingpointtointroducethemagpiesinourart.WespentaproductivelessonsittingoutsideinthelateNovembersunshineanddrewthefamilyofmagpiesastheyrummagedthroughthegardenneartheartstudio.Theclasshadtoworkveryquietlyandstaystill.ThisPleinAirexperiencegaveusmuchtodiscussbackinthestudioastheboysaddedtotheirsketchesofthebirds.Thefollowingweekweusedclaytomakesimplebirdshapeswithspreadwings.Thesebasicslabandsausageconstructedbirdsgavetheprepstheirrstexperienceofusingsliptojoinandtoothbrushestoscore.Eachbirdwasindividualsomewithwingtipsandotherswithlongbeaks.Astheywereatthesculpturesdriedquicklyandwereredwithintheweek.ThenextweekwelookedcloselyatsomephotosIhadtakenofthemagpiesanddiscussedthepatternsandfeaturesintheirplumage.Blackunderglazemadethedistinctivemarkingswithasimpledotofredunderglazepaintedintheeyetogivethemagpieitsdistinctivestare.Throughouttheseweekstheboystookgreatinterestinthemagpiesreportingtometheiractivitiesandwhereabouts.Thisprojecthadconnectedtheboystotheschoolenvironmentandmadethemawarethatothersalsosharetheplaygroundandworldwiththemeachday.WepaintedtheskyonsimpleMDFboardsusingspongesandblueandwhitepainttomimicthesoftcloudsinthesky.Glazedmagpieswereattachedtothesoft-cloudedskies.Wenishedtheprojectbywritingacoupletrhymewhichencapsulatedtheboysideasaboutthelifeoftheschoolmagpies.Theboysdescribedtheirobservationsofthemagpiessovividlythatcreatingacoupletcameeasy.ThemagpiesyintheskyFlyincircleswayuphighJamesEastwoodWordswerewritteninpermanentmakeralongtherimofthecloudsnishinganartworkthatbroughttogetherliteratureartandtherealmofpersonalexperience.EbonyRussellHeadofJuniorSchoolArtCamberwellGrammarwww.zartart.com.au8OurEnvironment CanIinterestyouinatriptoNepalKathmanduEverestSherpashikingToputitpolitely-NOTHANKYOUWellhowaboutNepalKathmanduEverestartistsartclassesYESPLEASEHowmuchWhenWheredoIsignupCheckoutthiswebsitewww.internationalartworkshops.comandlearnallyouneedtoknow.In2010ItriedveryhardtogetenoughstudentstogethertovisitNepalbutunfortunatelywasnotsuccessful.HavingspentsomuchtimeandenergyplanningthetripandgettingsoexcitedattheideaofvisitingacountrysodifferentIdecidedtogoanywayTwootherstaffmembersdecidedtojoinmeandspend16daysinNepaloverthersttermholiday.Ihopedtogetmoreinformationandlotsofphotographsaswellasrsthandexperiencethencomebackandtalkaboutourexperiencestoallourstudentsinthehopethatthatwouldgeneratemoreinterestandwewouldgetagroupofstudentstogethertomakethetripin2011.OurplanworkedandinAprilofthisyear8studentsand2staffleftBeaconhillsforKathmandufortheexperienceofalifetime.Thisiswhatwegotuptointhetendayswewereaway-DAY1FridayArrivedKathmanduAirport12noonbustoHotelunpackedandsettledin.DAY2SaturdayPatanisawonderfulmazeofcourtyardstinytinyalleywayshiddenshrinestemplesandpeopleshomes.WeweretakenthroughthestreetswithourguideSanjayaandeverybodyhadthechancetotakeinterestingphotosofthearchitectureandthemanypeopleinthestreetsgoingabouttheirdailylives.WhenwearrivedatthemainsquareIlsaandSanjayaaskedthelocalpeopletovolunteertoposeforuswhilstweallmadequickgesturedrawingsinourvisualdiariesaswellastakingphotosofthewonderfulfacesofourmodels.Backinthestudiointheafternoonwecreatedarstimpressionpaintinginvolvingwordssymbolsandcolourslaiddowninourdiariesusingpensmarkersandpaintcoloursandfoundsymbolsfromourmorningadventureswerealsousedtocreateanexpressivepainting.DAY3SundaySevenNepaliArtstudentsfrom4differentartcollegesinKathmandujoinedusfortheday.WevisitedSwayambhunathoftenreferredtoastheMonkeyTempleaparticularlyinterestingBuddhistaswellasHindusite.BeingfairlyhighupitprovidedawonderfulviewofthecityinthevalleyaswellasbeingaverybusymarketplaceforaspotofsouvenirshoppingOurstudentspairedwiththeNepalistudentstolearnabouttheplaceandwentoffwiththetaskofdrawingportraitsofeachother.IntheStudiolaterthatdayourstudentspairedwiththeNepalistudentsandspenttimelookingforcommonsayingsineachotherscultures.Oncetheyfoundasayingthatwassimilarinbothculturestheywrotethesayingdownontheotherscanvasandthendevelopedapaintingbasedonthesaying.DAY4MondayLoktapaperhandmadefromthebarkoftheLoktabushisverypopularinKathmanduandbroadlyusedinallsortsofways.Wevisitedalocalfactoryandwereallgiventheopportunitytomakeapieceofpaperforourselvesaswellaslearninghowtomakeanotebookusingtheloktapapers.BackintheStudiowecreatedabstractpaintingsonloktapaperusingdifferentleavesfoundinthehotelgroundsasmasks.DAY5TuesdayWoollenfeltisverypopularinKathmanduandiscraftedtomakebeautifulslippersbagstoysandaccessories.Wevisitedafactoryashortdriveawayandwereshownhowtheprocesswascarriedoutandhowtomakedifferentdesigns.Weallmadeafeltpurseandthensomeofthestudentshelpedmakethecushionsthatwerebeingmadethatday.AverydampandsoapyexperiencewashadbyallUsingthesoftedgesstrongcoloursandsimpleshapeswehadseeninthefeltingfactoryasabasisweworkedfromportraitphotographstosimplifytheformsandshapesandcomeupwithastrongcompositionofblocksofcolourandsoftedgessimilartothefeltimages.DAY6WednesdayAnhoursdrivefromPatanisasmallcountryschoolwith120pupils3-16yearsoldfromthelocalcommunity.Theyareself-fundedandpoorlyresourcedsowehadmadebadgesasafundraisingactivitybackatBeaconhillsandhad300asasmalldonationforthisschool.Weactuallyboughtacomputerfortheseniorstudentsandpresentedthistothemjustbeforeweleft.Wehadalsomadeabadgeforeverystudentintheschoolaswellastakinglotsofsouvenirstohandout.Ourstudentsranartactivitieswithsmallgroupsoftheirstudentswhichwasjustthemostamazingexperienceforourstudents.EachstudentcreatedapostcardsizeaboriginalstyledrawingofanAustraliananimal.Wetookallthematerialsandequipmentwithusandleftitallbehindforthemtousetosetuptheirnewartroom.ItaughttheteachershowtomakepapermushroomssothattheycouldDAYTWODAYTWODAYTHREENEPALADVENTUREwww.zartart.com.au4ArtExperiencesAbroad workwiththeyoungerstudentsandbeapartoftheSporeProject.WelefttheschoolonarealhighandheadedbackdowntheverynarrowdirtroadtoKathmandu.IlsaBrittaintheartistwhorunstheworkshopshadanexhibitionofherartworksintheSiddharthaArtGalleryinThamelsoofcourseweneededtomakeavisit.TheexhibitiontitledFemaleSubstantiveconsistedofbeautifulgurativepiecesinoilswithastrongabstractelement.Thestudentswereveryimpressedwiththemanypaintingsanddrawingswhichcreatedmuchfoodforthoughtandsomegreatdiscussionsaswetravelledbacktothehotel.DAY7ThursdayWespentthedayworkingwithamasterThankapainterSudarshanSuwal.EverybodylearnedabouttheverystrictandsymbolicartofThankapaintinghowtogrindpigmentsfromtheiroriginalmineralsourcesandthenproducedaminiThankapaintingoftheirownwiththepigmentswehadground.ThiswasaveryexactingandtimeconsumingtaskwhereeveryonegainedagreatappreciationofthetraditionalThankapaintingswehadseenonourtravelstodate.DAY8FridayBhoudhanathisthereligiouscentreforNepalsconsiderablepopulationofTibetanexiles.WewalkedaroundtheBhoudhanathStupaoneofthelargestintheworldinaclockwisedirectionthreetimes.Oncetomakesurewehadseeneverythingthentwicemoretomakeallourpurchasesfromthemanyshopsandstalls.Alotofbargainingtookplaceandmanypurchasesweremadeinaveryshortspaceoftime.TherewastimetovisitoneofthefewplacesintheworldwherestudentslearntheauthenticandsacredartofThankapainting.Theymustlearntheexactproportionsofeverydeityeachcolourwithitsprecisemeaningandthecorrectapproachtoundertaketheirworkwithpurity.Ittakessixyearstocompletethecourse.WepurchasedelevenThankapaintingsasmementosofourtimeinNepalinthisThankapaintingSchool.IntheafternoonwevisitedThamelformoreshoppingthenheadedtoKathmanduDurbarSquarethetraditionalheartoftheoldtownfullofbeautifulNepaliarchitectureandthecourtyardofthelivinggoddess.AfterashortwaitinthecourtyardwewererewardedwitharareglimpseofthelivinggoddesswhoissobeautifulsotinyandsoyoungNophotoswereallowedofthegoddessbutwemadeupforthatbypurchasingtheofcialphotographstobringhomewithus.DAY9SaturdayAtripbacktowherewestartedthisadventurePatanDurbarSquareThistimethoughtotakeareallycloselookatthearchitecturebothatgroundlevel...andfromonhighOurnaltimeintheStudiowasspentcreatingcollaborativeartpiecesthatprovedtobealotharderthanyouwouldthink.InitiallyitwashardtoletgoofyourownpieceandallowotherstoworkonitandequallyitwashardtoworkonsomeoneelsespiecebecauseyoudidntwanttowrecktheirworkEventuallywegotintothetaskandstartedtoenjoyaddingourownideastotheworks.Thenalresultswereamazingandwereaddedtoourvisualdiarieswithpride.DAY10SundayEasteregghuntpackupfarewellsthenheadtotheairportandhome.FromthemomentwesteppedofftheplaneinKathmanduoursenseswerebombarded.ThesightssoundsandsmellsofNepalwereattimesoverwhelmingbutalwaysfascinatingnewandsodifferentfromanythingwedexperiencedbefore.Theartworksandarchitecturewerestunningbeautifulandamazinglycolourful.Thecitieswerebusynoisydirtyalivewithpeopletrafcandanimalsandindirectcontrasttothequietbeautyofthecountrysideandsmallvillageswevisited.WeexperiencedmanyamazingplacesbutitwasthequietdignityamazingcourtesyandwonderfulhumouroftheNepalesepeoplethatwasthehighlightofthetripforme.Theirwillingnesstoallowusintotheirprivatelivestotrytocommunicatewithusandabovealltohavefunwiththemwaswhatmadethetripsospecial.LesleyLightBeaconhillsCollegeVillageCampusDAYFIVEDAYEIGHTDAYNINE5ZartExtra_Term32011 AftervisitingMirkaMoraexhibitionatHeideGallerylatelastyearPamFordhamfromtheRosannaGolfLinksPrimarySchoolwasinspiredtoworkwiththeartformofsoftsculpturewiththelevel4students.EachyearourschoolparticipatesintheBanyuleFestivalStreetParadeandasthisyearsthemeforthefestivalwasTheArtParadeitwasaperfectvehicletoexhibitlargesoftsculptures.ThestudentswereintroducedtotheartworkofMirkaMoraandwereequallyfascinatedwithherdolls.Theyworkedingroupsof4or5toplandesignandcreatetheirownsoftsculptures.Theyenjoyedusingtheirimaginationtoincorporatetheirvariedideasintoonecreature.MidwaythroughthetermthestudentswerefortunatetogoonanexcursiontoHeideGallerytoviewtheMirkaMoraexhibition.Theywereexcitedtoseetheartworkinreallifethattheyhadpreviouslyonlyseeninbooksandoncomputer.Formanyofthemitwastheirrstvisittoanartgalleryanditwasagreatlearningexperience.Therealisationthatartworkscanbecreatedforapurposeandforavarietyofaudiencesbecamecleartothem.Inpaintingtheirsoftsculpturestheyunderstoodtheimportanceofusingstrongclearcolourstocapturetheattentionofalargestreetaudience.Sizewasalsoafactorandtheyrosetothechallengeofenlargingtheirdesignsontocalico.Oneparentofferedherservicestosewthetwopaintedsidesofeachsculpturethenthestudentsstuffedtheedgeswithpolyesterllingandthebulkofthesculpturewithscrunchednewspaper.RodswereinsertedintothebackofthesculpturesfordisplayintheStreetParade.ThewholeschoolfocusedonvariousaspectsofMirkaMorasartduringthetermwhichculminatedinnearly200ofourstudentsparadingtheartofMirkadownBurgundyStreetinHeidelbergtogreatsuccess.ThenumberofstudentsfromallyearlevelsthatcameandtoldmetheyhadvisitedHeideGalleryonweekendstoseeMirkaMorasartworkindicatedhowenthusiastictheywereaboutthetopicandtheartworktheywereproducingintermone.FinallywewereallthrilledtoreceivealetterfromMirkaMorasayinghowpleasedshewastoreceivephotosofourartworkandlettersfromthechildrenandhowhonouredshewasthatwehadchosenherartworkasourthemefortheStreetParadeandourfocusofworkintermone.Thewholetermwasfantasticformakingartcomealiveandmeaningfulforthestudents.PamFordhamArtTeacherRosannaGolfLinksPrimarySchoolMirkaMoraSoftsculpturesjointheparade7ZartExtra_Term32011textilesarticle AspendaleGardensPrimarySchoolinvitestheschoolcommunitytoshareintheschoolsvisualartsprogram.PreparationsforourVINCENTEXHIBITIONbeganwithourstudyoftheartistslifeandworks.StudentspassionatelydelvedintoVincentVanGoghsamazingyetsotragiclife.Studentsandtheirfamilieswerepersonallyinvitedtojoinwithusaswesharedourknowledgeandunderstandings.PriortotheeveningfamilieswerealsoinvitedtocreatetheirownmasterpieceforourFamilyMasterpieceCompetition.IcouldntbelievetheinterestthathadbouncedoffthestudentsandredtheenthusiasmofwholefamiliestorecreateoneofVanGoghsmasterpieces.Studentsarrivedintheartroomdaysbeforetheduedatecarryingtheirpreciousreproductions.Otherswaitedexcitedlywithproudmumsanddadsandlittlebrothersandsisterswatchingwaitingfortheirturntopresenttheirentry.WehadcanvasespiecestornfromsketchpadsandevenelaborateStarryNightscompletewithrealstarrylightsThestudentsrstattemptsatrecreatingVanGoghstechniquesweredisplayedforstudentstoexplainandsharetheirlearnings.TwostudentsofDutchdescentwelcomedeveryonetoourExhibitioninDutch.TheirproudmumhadworkedwiththemandalsobroughtsamplesoftheDutchculturetodisplay.DutchmusicplayedwhileourVisualArtsLeadersexplainedourMatchtheVanGoghpaintingwithitstitlecompetitiontofamiliesastheyarrived.Familiesrushedtoentereagerlydiscussingtheworksandeachmemberenthusiasticallycontributingtheirideas.OurLOTEroombecameaminitheatretteinwhichfamiliescouldviewaDVDcreatedwithourLOTEteachershowcasinginmoredetailthelifeandworksoftheartistasseenthroughinterviewsanddramapresentedbythelevel3students.ThiswashostedandintroducedbyourVisualArtsLeaders.FamiliesmovedthroughthevariousvenuesendingupinourschoollibrarywherestudentshadrecreatedtheirowncompleteVanGoghstylemasterpieces.Studentsproudlyledtheirfamiliestotheirworksandsharedwiththemalltheyhaddone.OurFamilyMasterpieceCompetitionwasdisplayedinourschoolfoyerandwasawonderfulnaletotheevening..demonstratinghowthestudentsengagementandloveoftheirlearningcandrivethemtoshareitwithothers.LasttermourLevel4studentsshowcasedtheirstoryofthewonderfulinspiringAustralianartistMirkaMora.WedecidedtopresentourartworkstoourfamiliesinanauthenticFrenchcaf.TheVisualArtsLeaderstookonthetaskoforganizingthetwoevenings.Noteswerewrittenhomeaskingparentstoassistwiththecateringarrangementsforthenights.Parentsandstaffwerealsoropedintohelpwithdecorations.SewingbuntinginthecafcoloursandsewingaMIRKASCAFsigntohangabovetheentrance.StudentscreatedinvitationsforthetwoeveningstoensureallwouldbeabletotintoourLevel4Headquarterspace.Theystayedbackafterschooltohelpsetupthecafstyleexhibition.Hangingbuntingplacinglampsandlowcoffeetablesandchairsandhangingfairylights.FrenchmusicplayedascutelanternsickeredonthebalconythearomaofcoffeeandFrenchdelicaciesservedbyourFrenchwaitersandwaitressesdressedinFrenchstyle.TheywelcomedandmadeeveryonefeelliketheywerereallyintheLatinQuarterofParisAvisitbyPierredelaRueourrealFrenchandartisteaddedthenaltouchtothenight.HeformallythankedeveryoneforcomingpraisingtheeffortsofallinFrenchandannouncedthosewhohadwonspecialmentionfortheirefforts.Familiessoakeduptheatmospheremovingthroughthecafcoffeeandcrepesinhanddiscussingtheirownchildspiecebutalsorelishingtheopportunitytoadmireandcelebratetheworksofallthestudents.JulieLachVisualArtTeacherAspendaleGardensPrimarySchoolInvolvingtheschoolcommunitythroughartwww.zartart.com.au6wholeschoolproject
