laughterfromthechildrenandonlookerseruptedandbecamecontagious.CanvastarpaulinsslungamongthetreesandgoalpostsweresoonlledwithGijapeoplearrivingfromallovertheKimberleys.SomecamefromFrogHollowdowntheroadandKununurrabutallwithacommonthreadofcelebrationandthesharingofGijaculture.Itwasntlongbeforecuriosityandinterestovercametheshylocalsandtheystartedtowanderovertoseewhatweweredoingthere.WhereareyoufromWhatareyoudoingCanImakeoneWehadSoftCutlinoandaselectionoffabricblockprintinginksrollersandcalicobags.Allsetforadayofinspirationalaboriginalcuttingandprinting.Wediscoveredveryquicklythattemperaturesof39Cmetalprintingtraysandhotwindarenotconducivetoprinting.Wedampenedthecalicobagsdowntohelptheprintingprocessbutfoundthatweonlyhadaboutanhourinwhichtoprint.BothwomenandchildrenenjoyedthesimplicityandeaseofcuttingtheSoftCutandthedirectmethodofdesigntransfer.Smilesallroundwhentraditionaldesignswereexecutedsuccessfully.Withprintingdecidedlynishedforthedayweretreatedforthetarpaulinshadewithourboxesofwoolknittingneedlesandcrochethooks.Wehadbroughtupwithusaselectionofhand-madeBeaniesreadyforinterestedandonceagaincuriousonlookers.ThewomenwereparticularlyinterestedasthislookedlikeWomensbusiness.Theywerequicktopointoutthattheycouldknittoobuttheydiditinthetraditionalwayusingtheirhandsandtoes.PeggyPatrickatraditionalsingershowedushowtoknotabeltandplaitandtwineheadbandswithrolledfringesbasedonthetraditionalmethodofmakinghairbelts.Suddenlythetableswereturnedandweweretheonesbeingtaught.Thedaycametoanendwithatraditionalbushtuckerbarbequeofkangaroobeefbushturkeystuffedwithgumleavesandoncedarknessfellacelebratorycorroboree.ThecorroboreeRoverThomasdreamwasperformedbesidearebuiltaroundafourmetrehightreetrunkthattooktheformofastick-likehumantorsotheresoaredtoatleasttenmetresintothesky.ThefollowingtwodayswerespentattheWarmunPrimarySchoolknownasNgalangangpun.ThisschoolisrunbyJosephiteNunsanorderofMaryMcKillopMotherandChild.Itisaco-educationalschoolforabout120AboriginalchildrenfromPrePreptoYear9.PuppetmakingwasontheagendaforthesetwodaysandJudehadbeenverybusysewingbrightlycolouredpuppetsfromstretchknitpolareecefabric.TheseweredecoratedwithBeadsSequinsJoggleEyesFeathersandfur.Thechildrenweresoexcitedwiththeirpuppetsthattheyinvitedusbackthefollowingdayfortheirbreak-upAssemblysothattheycouldshowthemtotherestoftheschoolcommunity.PriortoleavingforWarmunwehadcollectedsewingmachineswoolfabricsknittingneedlesandcrochethooksdonatedbykindfriendsfromMelbourneandthesewerewelcomedgratefullybytheWomensCentre.OurtriptoWarmunhasbeenanexcitingexhilaratingandmemorableexperience.Thecommunitywelcomeduswarmlyandgaveusmanylaughsandsomefantasticmemories.ButtheoverwhelminghighlightwastheintimateinsightthatweweregivenintoGijaculture.Thisrsthandknowledgewillbeaninvaluablesupportforourteachingofindigenousartandculturethroughourcurriculumatourrespectiveschools.AnamazingPDexperienceThankyoutoZartforthegenerousdonationwhichmadeitpossibletotakeaqualityandrewardingartprogramtoaremoteoutbackcommunity.JaneByrneJudeWigleyandVirginiaHardingTocontactWarmunArtCenterwww.warmunart.comZartExtra_Term120099 The3DStudiesunitofworkwasundertakenbytheYearSevenstudentsandintegratedeffectivelywiththeirHumanitiestopicofDeserts.DoublingastheirHumanitiesteacherIwasabletolinkcertainterminologyappropriatetobothunitsespeciallyastheywerestudiedconcurrentlyduringtheterm.ThestudentshavingcomefromavarietyofschoolswithintheregionhadlimitedVisualArtexperiencesoaunitenablingbeginningskillswiththeclaymediumwasdevised.WebeganbyobservinganddiscussingtheartworkofThancoupie-anAustralianAboriginalceramicartist-theelementsofdesignwithinherworkandtheculturalcontext.ADVDonclayplaywasshownenablingstudentstocomprehendthethreemethodsofcreatingformspinchslabandmouldfollowedbypracticaldemonstrationsofthepinchtechniqueslideshowsandactualexamplesofpaststudentswork.Additionaltheorydiscussionsandceramicterminologyalsoaccompaniedthelessonsaswellasfocusonsafetywithmaterialsandtechniques.Thencamethedesigningplanningofthemarksmadeassurfacedecorationontheeggs.ThestudentswereaskedtodrawarectangleintheirVisualDiariesof15x20cm.WithinthisspaceanSbendcontourwaslightlydrawninpencilinadiagonalfashionasastartingpoint.Thisencouragedanorganicdesignandlimitedthestudentsmakingsymmetricalcompositions.Fromtheretheyextendedthedesignandexploredthespaceusingrhythmicallinescreatingshapesandpatternskeepinginmindanorganicowingoutcomeasitwastobeeventuallytransferredtoa3Dorganicshape.Twohalvesoftheeggwerecreatedusingthepinchmethodfollowedbyjoiningusingtheslipandscoremethodandsmoothingoftheequatorline.Thestudentswereinstructedtowraptheirdesignsaroundtheeggbyfollowingtheirplanscarefullyandincisingthelinesintothesurfaceusingasharpgraphitepencil.Ihavefoundthesetobethebestandcheapesttoolsforthejobandalsoexcellentformakingstipplemarks.Additionalloopandribbontoolswereemployedtosubtractandcarvelowerareas.Additionalclaywasusedtocreateareasinrelief.Othersuccessfulmarkswerecreatedbyfoundtoolssuchastheinnerplastictubingofapenobjectsfoundfromhomeetc.WhilstmanipulatingtheclaythestudentsrealisedthelinkbetweentheirstudiesonDesertsandtheir3Dformstheycommentedthatmesasgullieslongitudinaldunesetc.werebeingcreatedwithintheirdesignsontheclaysurface.Oncedriedandbisqueredthestudentsselectedanoxidecolourapplieditwithadaggyruinedbrushduetothestabbingmethodemployedtoenabletheoxidetopenetratethestippledandincisedareasandwipedtheoxidefromtheraisedsurfacewithasponge.Thiswastimeconsumingasitrequiredrepetitiveactiontoreallygetthesurfacecleantorevealacontrastwiththedarkoxideintheincisedareas.Afurtherringoccurredtocuretheoxideontotheclayandoncetheeggswerereturnedtotheirownersthereweresomeverysurpriseddelightedandproudstudents.Inadditiontotheeggthestudentscreatedabaseorstandthatechoedthedesignsonthesurfaceoftheclay.Studentsevaluatedtheirexperiencesoutcomesandsuccessattheendoftheunitbeforesubmittingtheirnal3DfolioandVisualDiary.TheSerpentevolvedasameansofdisplayingthestudentsworkscollectivelyunderthestairwellintheCollegefoyerandsincewedstudiedoraandfaunaofthedesertsitseemedapttodisplaytheireggsinsuchamanner.Thecontrastoftexturesbetweenthesandandclaydelightedallwhoenteredthebuildinganditbecameoneofthosesuperbtactileexperiencesvisionsthatelicitedmanyfavourablecommentsindeedfromvisitorsstudentsparentsandstaffalike.PetraGlaserVisualArtSpecialistICACaseyCollegeNarreWarrenSouthwww.zartart.com.au4secondaryarticlecont
