IrstmetNicholasHutchesonatlastyearsA.E.V.Conference.HewaspresentinghimselfasanArtistwhohadreceivedaFellowshiptovisitAntarcticain2008.FrancesEvansandGeorginaReidpresentedtheirDVDasartistswhohadrecentlyreturnedfromArtistFellowshipstoAntarcticaandIwasoverwhelmedbythebeautytheywereabletocapturebothphotographicallyandmusicallyaspartoftheirproject.NickhadadifferentreasonforattendingtheConference.HewaslookingforSchoolstocommunicatewithhimwhileinAntarcticaandpossiblyparticipateinhisExhibitionuponhisreturn.WhatanopportunityIthoughtformystudentstoaccessnotonlytheartistbuttheCreativeProcess.AfterthepresentationNickstoodintheFoyerclipboardinhandandafterabriefchatweweresignedon.UsuallythechildrenIteachareluckytoaccesstheartistbehindtheartworkbutNickwasofferingmore.IwasthinkingoftheGrade56areaandthepotentialforintegratingitbackintotheclassroom.LuckilymyschoolstillemploysanArtsSpecialistandhasaStudiosoaspectsoftheprojectcouldstandaloneandtheAntarcticThemecouldrunaslongaswasnecessary.WhenIreturnedtoschoolboththeGrade56teacherswerereallyexcited.ItcouldbeadaptedtotintoaCommunicationThemetheywereplanningandwewereallexcitedaboutitspotentialformakingGlobalWarmingissuesalittlemoretangibleforthechildren.NickcameinandweshowedthechildrenAntarcticavisuallyboththroughGeorginasDVDandimagesNickhadpreparedasaslideshow.TheyaskedquestionsandwesetuptheconceptofthembeingabletoemailNickandreceivewebpageswhilehewasaway.Mychildrendontoftenhaveconversationswithartistsandtheirfacesweremagic.NicktoldthemwhereAntarcticawasandhowcolditmightbewhilehewasthere.HeexplainedwhyhewasinterestedtogoandhowhehadreceivedtheFellowship.Wetalkedaboutconditionshemightexperienceandhowthismightaffecthisabilitytodraworpaint.Nickalsoshowedthechildrensomeofhisartworksothattheybecamefamiliarwithhimasanartist.HepaintsreneriesintheWesternSuburbsandasmyschoolisclosetothesemychildrenrespondedtothefamiliarimages.NickwastoleaveattheendofJanuary2008sowearrangedforhimtomeettheGrade45childrenwhowouldbeGrade562008inDecember.InthemeantimeIhadvisitedGeorginaandboughtacopyofherDVDtoshowthechildrenanddiscoveredthatthehusbandofafriendofminehadgonetoAntarcticatodocumentanArtistsjourneytwoyearsbefore.IrangMatthewandhewasverygenerousandsupportive.HehadaDVDtooandheapsofuncutfootageifneeded.IorganisedtohavehimcometotalktothechildrenwhileNickwasawaytobridgethegapandmakethingsalittlelessabstract.HismoviewhichhadappearedontheABCdocumentedStephenEastaughashetravelledtoAntarctica.ItshowedconditionswhichweresoseverethatononeparticularoccasionitwasalmostimpossibleforStephentoopenthedoortothelittlehuthewasstayinginwhileheproducedhisartwork.TheyalsosawStephenhavingtore-thinkhisoriginalplantopaintonalargescaleasthehuthewasstayingindidntofferhimenoughoorspacetounrollhiscanvas.AswewatchedMatthewsDVDwesawtheBasesNickwouldbevisiting.MatthewshowedussomeabandonedBaseswhichcannotbecleaneduporremoved.Thechildrendidntrealiseuntiltheendofthemoviethattheywereintheroomwiththeactuallm-makerandwhentheyapplaudedtheywereapplaudingthemansittingatthefront.TheywereabletoaskMatthewquestionsaboutwhatNickwouldbeexperiencingandwhatitwaslikewhenhehadbeentoAntarctica.Itwasgreat.WebrainstormedsomethingswemightdobackatschooltosimulatesomeofthethingsNickmightbedoinganddecidedtodrawICEintheStudiowhilestandingonwobbleboardswearingmittens.Nickthoughtthiswasgreatandcouldntwaittoseewhatthechildrencameupwith.Nickstayedforaboutanhourandthenwesaidgoodbyetohim.ThenextcommunicationwewouldhavewithNickwouldhappenaftertheSummerHolidaysviatheInternet.Theseedhadbeenplanted.NickandIcommunicatedviaemailduringtheholidaysandhesetupawebpageandlinkssothatcommunicationwouldbefairlysimple.Nickdesignswebpagesasafreelanceartistsowewereinforsomethingspecial.Ididntrealisethenjusthowspecial.ThechildrenhadbeenaskedtothinkofquestionsthatNickcouldanswerwhilehewasinAntarctica.WeemailedthesetoNickandeachweekhewouldansweraquestionfromadifferentchildatadifferentschoolanditwouldappearalongwithillustrationsonhiswebpageHeadingSouth.DimitriaGrade56studentfrommyschoolwassoexcitedwhenhisquestionaboutthecoldesttemperatureNickhadexperiencedappearedonthewebpage.Nickswebpageswerebrilliant.TheyhadvesectionsDrawingsWordoftheWeekInterviewWeatherandYourQuestions.Eachsectionexpandedintoitsownmulti-pagedocument.Nickwouldsendushisdrawingsoftheweekwhichcouldincludeasmanyaselevenimages.Wecouldseewhathehadbeenseeingandwhattechniquesandmediahehadbeenusing.WordsoftheweekwereAntarcticrelatedforexampleAntarcticNose-wiperMitt-aglovewithasheepskinpadonthebackforwipingyournosewithoutfreezingyourhands.Interviewswerebeautifulastheanswerswerehand-writteneventhoughthewholedocumentwascomputergenerated.Theseincludedacoupleofdrawingsofthepersonbeinginterviewed.Weatherwouldbedrawnandtemperatureswouldbeincludedjusttoputusinthepicture.YourQuestionssectionwouldincludethequestionandtheAntarcticaAnArtExplorationwww.zartart.com.au6Primaryarticle
