TrilogyofLifesecondaryarticleZartExtra_Term120043Ialwayswantedtomakeart.IcouldntwaittogosomewherewhereIcouldsplashpaintaroundandtrythingswithoutbeingafraidofmakingmistakes.ThefreedomIwishedforIfoundatStCatherinesSchoolalthoughIdidntreallyhavethatfreedomuntilIundertooktheVCE.InsteadofdoingUnits1and2IdecidedtofasttrackintoYear12andthatwasoneofthebestdecisionsIhaveevermade.ItgavemethefocusandmotivationIneededandencouragedmetopushandextendmyself.Workingwitholderstudentsalsomademeapproachmyworkinaveryseriousway.MyTrilogyofLifewhichIcompletedformyVCEArtfoliocomprisedofthreeverylargepaintingsonMDFboard.Inawaytheworksareself-explanatoryanddontneedtobetalkedaboutalthoughIwilldiscusstheprocess.Allyouneedtodoisjustlookatthemtoabsorbandrespondtotheintensityoftheredsthecontrastingbluesandpurplesandthehighlightsofcreamsandyellows.Whatshouldbeofgreaterinterestishowthetexturedeffectsofcrackedcolourswereachieved.Surethereisacommercialmediumthatallowsyoutocreatetheeffectsofcracklingbutnotonthisscale.TheIdea.InfirstsemesterIhadworkedonaseriesofverylargedramaticblackandwhitefiguredrawingsandIdesperatelyneededachange.JeffMakinscolourfulinterpretationsofthecountrysidearoundLakeEyreinspiredmetoexploretheimpactofdramatichotredscontrastedwithcoolerblues.MyteacherMrDarbyintroducedustotheWilliamCreekandBeyondExpeditiontoCentralAustraliaforourArtexamination.MakinsworkalongwiththatofartistssuchasJohnOlsenAndrewSibleyTimStorrierandHazelDooneywereawesome.WhatIinitiallyconsideredaninterestingbackgroundformyfiguredrawingsbecamemymajorinterestformyfinalworks.Thefiguresrecededinimportanceandthecolourfulbackgroundsbecamemyfocus.TheMethodOntwoofmyfiguredrawingsIaccidentallydiscoveredthatwhenIpaintedacryliccoloursontothepaperandthenappliedacoatofGlassEnameloverthetopwhiletheacrylicwasstillwetthetwoliquidswoulddryatdifferentratesandthetopsurfacecrackedquitedramatically.Ilovedthiseffectanddecidedtomakethisamajorexploration.IfoundthatifIappliedathinlayerofGlassEnamelandblendeditalittlethecrackswouldbefineandquitesubtle.IfIappliedathickerlayerofGlassEnamelthecolouredsurfaceswouldbelargerandthecracksmoreobvious.BotheffectswereinterestingandIwantedtotakefulladvantageofeachone.IlearnedalotanddevelopedmyskillsandtechniquesconsiderablyasIworked.ThevariousredsandcreamswereworkedtogetherusingablendingtechniqueandthenIscratcheddetailsintothesurfaceusingmetalscribersandfiles.WhilemuchofthereactionbegantooccurasIworkeditwasntuntilIreturnedtotheroomformynextclassthatthefulldramaticresultwasapparent.AlthoughIhadanideahowitwouldturnouttherewasalwaysthatamazingexperienceofdiscoveringthefulleffectsofthecrackingandblendingoncethecolourshaddried.IalwayshurriedtoseewhatIhadcreated.ItisimportanttounderstandthatdiscoveringsomethingasamazingasthisencouragesyoutospendalotmoretimethannormalintheArtroom.TheMaterials.IusedGlobalacrylicpaintswhichcomeineasy-to-handlecontainersandagoodrangeofcolours.TheZartGlassEnamelsareakindofthickstronghoney-likeliquidthatprovideintenseglossyeffects.Theyareoftenusedbystudentstocreatetransparentorsemitransparentsurfaceswhichcanprovidesomeoftheeffectsofstainedglasswindows.Theacrylicpaintwasappliedusinglargebristlebrushesandarangeofspongesonsticks.TheGlassEnamelwaswipedoverthisinitialsurfaceusingahandheldcleaningspongeaswellasthespongesonsticks.ImadeaseriesoffoursmalltrialsonYear11student-StCatherinesSchool 4ZartExtra_Term12004secondaryarticlecontcanvasboardsusingarangeofredsandcreams.ThesewereveryeffectiveandgavemeaguidefromwhichtoworkwhenIstartedmylargerfinalworks.TheArtisticeffects.Whatismostnoticeablewhenyoufirstlookatthisseriesofworksistheirscaleandsize.Iwantedtocreateworksthatcouldnotbeignored.TheyweresobigIneededtoplacethemontopofthetablesandkneelandcrawlallaroundthem.MysockswouldbecomesaturatedwithcolourandIwouldgetintotroubleforwalkingitthroughthestudiosMyteacherwasverypatientwithme.Theintenseemotionalredscontrastedwiththedeepcoolbluesandpurplesalsostandoutclearlyasdothestrongcreamhighlights.Itisinterestinghowpowerfulandeffectivethiscolourschemeis.DuringtheVCEexhibitionpeopleinterpretedtheseriesofworksindifferentways.Somesawthemjustasarrangementsofcoloursshapesandtexturessomesawthemashavinghiddenmeaningsandmessageswhileothersnoticedtherelationshiptomyearlierfiguredrawings.OverallpeopleenjoyedtheartworksandappreciatedthevisualeffectsIhadcreated.Iwasecstaticwiththeresponse.AlexAndersonYear11StCatherinesSchoolToorak. primaryarticlecontZartExtra_Term120045profileAhighlightoftheVisualArtsProgramatMyrtlefordPrimarySchoolistheannualvisitofDavidandShirleyWilliams.DavidisarenownedwatercolourartistShirleyhiswifeisaverycapablemanagerandassistant.DavidandShirleyspentaweekinstructingourpupilsfromPrepto6inthegentleartofwatercolourpaintingwithlastyearsfocustopicYearoftheFreshwater.Childrenweretimetabledfortwoonehoursessionsduringwhichclassteachersattendedandwereassistedbyparentswhomountthecompletedworksofartforourexhibition.Ourstudentscametoacknowledgethevalueofourwaterresourcesduringthelonghotsummer.MyrtlefordwasoneoftheNorthEasterntownssurroundedbyfirewithadelayedstarttotheschoolyearduetothedangersoffireandsmokeexposure.WehadnoexcursionorrelatedactivitiesorexperiencesleadinguptoourcelebrationbutbeingacountrytownintheAlpineRegionourchildrenliveinanenvironmentofriversbushmountainsandlakeswheretheycanswimonasummereveninggofishingexperiencewaterandsnowskiingandbushwalking.WeresourcedbooksandchartsfromourschoollibrarywhichDavidusedaspointsofreferenceforthetopiclisthepreparedinadvance.DavidisafrequentvisitortotheNorthEastandrealisesthechildrenbringtheirownknowledgeandexperiencestotheirwork.Wehadrosellasinourschoolgardenthemorningtheywerepainted.Davidobservedtheseonhiswaytoourschoolblockandsomebeautifulpaintingsresulted.Hecommencedeachsessionwithdemonstrationsofbasicrulestofollowconcerningtheuseofwatercolourbrushesandtheskillofblendingwaterwithpaint.Ageneralquestionandanswersessionabouteachtopicfollowed.Davidthenledthechildrenintoeachactivitydemonstratinglineperspectiveandcolouruseashewent.Over800individualexhibitsweremountedandhunginanexhibitionpresentedtoparentsandfriendsofourschoolcommunityattheendoftheweek.Thechildrensbesteffortswereframedusingcardboardmountsandotherworkswerecombinedingeneraldisplays.ParentsattendingtheexhibitionweredelightedbytherangeoftopicssuchasBubbleBalletCaterpillarsEelsInWaterMrCeleryandMrPotatoHeadWaterDropletswithRocksSnowonMtBuffaloAutumnLeavesWaterTanksandWindMillsGumbootsinPuddlesWaterLilyinPondsFabulousFungiSunsetontheLakewhichexpressedourappreciationofaverypreciousresource.PhilippaCartwrightArtsCoordinatorMyrtlefordPrimarySchoolArtinaCountryTown LightReflectionExhibitionprimaryarticleZartExtra_Term120047ThisExhibitionincludesworkfromstudentsinallprimarylevelsandwascreatedwiththeassistanceofArtistinResidenceCatherineOLeary.TheideawastostudytheelementsofColourTransparencyReflectionsandLight.ThiswasachievedthroughtheuseofmaterialssuchasperspexScratchLiteCellophanefabricsTissuePaperArmatureWireAcetateFilmSilverFoilandMirrors.EachyearlevelworkedontheExhibitionthroughdifferentmediumsandthetotaleffectwasoneofamyriadofcoloursandsurfacetexturesreboundingoffSilverFoilandMirrors.Theeffectcreatedanintricatefantasylikeatmospherewithlightsfinishingthepicture.YearPrepstudentsworkedthroughScratchLiteillustrationsonperspexandwiresculptures.DevelopingsimpleshapeswithArmatureWireandthenhammeringthesetotransformthemintoafixedshapewithtexturecreatedthewiresculptures.Thesehammeredshapeswerethenlinkedtogetherandfixedontoacoathangerwithbeadsattachedtoformadecorativeelement.YearOnestudentsworkedonmobilesmadefromwirecoathangerspulledintoadiamondshape.Inthetopcentreofthisshapetheyplacedasquarepieceofperspexpaintedwithglasspaints.TheoutsideofthecoathangerwasdecoratedwithmetallicthreadsandotheradditionsincludingFloristWirethreadedwithcolouredbeads.YearTwostudentsalsousedwirecoathangersasanarmaturefortheirmobiles.Usingtwocoathangerscrossedovereachother.TheythencoveredthemincolouredTissuePaper.FromthispointthemobilewasfurtherdecoratedbyusingArmatureWirehammeredintointricateshapesandplacedwithinthecoathangershape.AdditionalwireshapesweresuspendedfromthebaseofthehangersandclearplasticstripspaintedwithPoscaPenswerealsoattachedandhungfromthebase.YearThreestudentsworkedwithcolouredCellophaneandScratchLiteonperspexpanels.TheseincludedcollagesofillustrationsonScratchLiteandcollagedpatternworkcreatedfromcolouredCellophane.Theseweremadeintoconstructionpanelsinterconnectedwithoneanotherandplacedeitheronorovermirrorpanels.YearFourstudentsstudiedtheEnvironmentin2003andproducedtheirworkinnaturalmaterialssuchaswoolsandsilks.TheystudiedthelightandshapesproducedbytreecanopieswithintheAustralianbushanddevelopedtheirownBushCanopy.ThiswasdevelopedbyusingMerinoWoolandfeltingtechniquesandwassuspendedoverthetopoftheExhibition.OtherinclusionsfromYearFourincludedsilkleavesmadefromSilkFibreswithcollagematerialsofatransparentnatureoverlaid.YearFiveandSixdevelopedperspexpanelsandwiresculptures.AsbothofCareyBaptistGrammarDonvale 8ZartExtra_Term12004theseyearlevelswerestudyingtheMediatheirworkintheexhibitionwasbasedonthistheme.TheydevelopedcollageworkusingTissuePapercolouredCellophaneandAcetatephotocopiesandsandwichedthecollagebetweentwopiecesofperspex.ThiswasframedbyusingGafferTapewithholesdrilledforhangingpurposes.Theseworkswerepositionedtocatchthelight.Otherworkcreatedbythesestudentswerewiresculpturesthatusedtwowirecoathangerscrossedoveroneanotherandpulledintoadiamondshape.ThebasicshapewasthencoveredwithavarietyofintricateshapesmouldedfromArmatureWireandhammeredintoafixedshape.EachshapewasjoinedtogetherwithfineFloristWire.ThesculpturewasthendecoratedwithfinebeadsandtheenclosedspacewithinthecentreoftheshapefilledwithtransparentcolouredCellophane.ThewholeExhibitionformedacorridorthroughwhichvisitorscouldwalkandviewthework.Therewasacanopyformedoverheadfromwhichsomeoftheworkhungandmirrorswerepositionedallalongthebenchesatavarietyofdifferentangles.ThisallowedforviewingoftheworkthroughReflectionsthatformedwithinthemirrors.AdditionaldisplayfeaturesincludedcoveringthewindowsandtreebrancheswithcrushedAluminiumFoilandCDsweredecoratedwithreflectivematerials.AllbenchtopsthatformedpartoftheExhibitionwerecoveredwithaMirrorfinishedcard.AllvisitorsandstudentshaveenjoyedourexplorationoftheuseofReflectionandLightandlearnedagreatdealaboutthequalitiesofthematerialsassociatedwiththeseelements.WehavealsoplayedaroundwiththetopicofthemanipulationofColourandTexturesandtheanalogyassociatedwithMediamanipulationintheworkproducedbytheolderstudents.Theeffectofanglesonshapesandcoloursanditsabilitytotricktheeyeoftheviewerwasalsoofgreatinterest.OverallthestudentsgainedenormousdepthintheirunderstandingoftheseimportantelementsofArtandDesignandenjoyedthejourneywetooktodevelopthework.primaryarticlecontJeanetteJenningsArtCoordinatorCareyBaptistGrammarDonvale primaryarticleZartExtra_Term420043FeltMasksLynFerrallVisualArtsCoordinatorBeverleyHillsPrimarySchoolWhenplanningthisactivityformyYear6childrenIwantedtotakethechildrensfelt-makingtoanotherlevel.WhileIwaskeentogivethechildrenexperiencewiththetechniqueofmakingfeltIalsowantedtogivethemacreativeopportunitytoapplytheirvisualartsskillstothecompletedpieceoffelt.EarlierinthetermwehadspentsometimelookingatAndyWarholsworkwithfamousfaceshisworkwithcolouritsbalanceandcontrastsandhisuseofpatterntextureandline.Asaresultwedecidedtomakeourpiecesoffeltwiththethoughtinmindthatthefinishedpiecewouldbeacanvasforamask.MakingthefeltChildrenchosetheirwool-topcolourswiththeirfinishedmaskinmind.AlthoughwehaddonesomedesignanddrawingworkIwascarefultoemphasizethatthepiecewouldevolveandtheinitialdesignwouldserveasaguideonly.AftermakingthefeltpiecefromMerinoWool-Tops-therearemanybooksonthesubjectandZartArthasexcellentnotes-weproceededtoaddtoourmaskform.FormingthemaskshapeWeusedplasticmaskformsandaddedscrunchedandrolledpaperandcardwithplasticpackagingtapetoalterthesizeshapeandfeaturesoftheoriginalform.Thiswasrestedonalargepieceofplastic.Firstwetriedoutourpieceoffeltonthealteredmaskform.HowdiditdrapebestwhichsideshouldweusewillthepiecebebigenoughtocreaseandfoldwillwepushholesthroughforoureyesmouthWemadeasolutionofPVAandwaterabouthalfandhalfandsaturatedourfeltpiecebydippingitintothecontainer.Leavingthepiecequitewetwedrapeditoverthemaskformandhadfunarrangingre-arrangingcreasingfoldingandfinallyleavingthewetpiecetodry.DecoratingImadealargecollectionofmaterialsavailablefordecoration.Wehadlookedatseveralbooksandpostersanddecidedthatwewantedanaturallookforourmasksasopposedtoaglitzylookwithlotsofsequinsandglitter.Wefeltthatraffiastringwoolmorewool-topsbuttonsfeatherschenillestemsthreadswouldmakethemostsuitabledecorativematerials.Iwasdiligentinaddressingthepossibleapplicationsofeachofthematerialsoffered.Wediscussedhowwehadusedeachinthepastitssuitabilitytothisapplicationthedifferentwaysitcouldbeusedmostsuitablewaystoadhereittothemasketc.Thechildrenareusedtousingtwoormoredecorativematerialstogetherforexampleafeltshapebehindapaintedhalfpolyballattachedwithsmallpiecesoffeatherforaneye.Theyareusedtosharingideasandofferingadvicetoeachotheronthechoiceofcolourmaterialsuitableglueetc.Theyhavebeenencouragedtocontinuallyassesstheirworkinprogressandknowwhentostopratherthantocontinuetoadddecorationfordecorationssake.ConverselytheyareencouragedtoassesstheirworkinprogressandaskwhatmorecanIdoThisactivitywasagreatsuccesswithmyYear6children.Weworkedforsixweekstomakethefeltandcompletethemask.Attheendoftheprojectthechildrenvoicedagreatsenseofsatisfactionwiththeirwork.Theyhadexcelledintheircreativeuseofawidevarietyofmaterialstheyhadbeenencouragedtothinkabouttheirchoicesofcolourtheiruseofpatternandtextureandtheirmixofcontrastingandcomplementarycolourtomakeadynamicstatement.BeverleyHillsPrimarySchoolAselectionofmasksareondisplayatZartsStudentGallerythisterm.
