Painting Better Portraits 

with Yvette Coppersmith (Archibald Prize Winner 2018)

This workshop is designed to develop and strengthen observational skills and to provide a structure in working with the portrait.

The pace of the class encourages freedom of mark-making and speed which pushes through tendencies to perfect each mark.  

Topics include seeing the face geometrically, tone and colour, sketching, portrait proportions and painting techniques.

 


 

 

 

 

About the Presenter
Yvette Coppersmith is a Melbourne based artist, graduating from the Victorian College of the Arts in 2001. Yvette's practice began as a portraitist working in a realist style. In the 21years since her first oil painting, her visual language has expanded to include still life, abstraction, and an interplay of those elements with the figure. Yvette exhibits nationally and internationally, and has been commissioned for portraits for public and private collections. Yvette is the Winner of the 2018 Archibald Prize and 5 time finalist. Her work has also been a finalist the Geelong Contemporary Art Prize, the Doug Moran National Portrait Prize, the Portia Geach amongst others. Her 2017 Archibald portrait of Emeritus Professor Gillian Triggs is part of the Foxtel Arts doco 'The Archibald' by Mint Pictures. Yvette won the inaugural Metro Prize in 2003 and began teaching painting/drawing in 2004. She has run workshops at the National Gallery of Victoria, Benalla Regional Art Gallery, Geelong Grammar School, Melbourne Girls Grammar School, The Art Room, Fitzroy Painting and Zart Art.
