This practical, hands-on workshop is focused on ways that make the teaching of art appreciation exciting and more relevant for students of all levels. It provides numerous teaching strategies and approaches that participants will use in shared activities and which can then be used directly with students in class.

The focus is on active engagement with artworks and other people rather than take the form of a passive non-participatory session. Ideas for classroom and home projects will be introduced and discussed. Since the NGV will have an exhibition of the works of Vincent Van Gogh on show at the time of the workshop, some of his works will be used in at least one specific activity.

Some of the other activities will encourage the idea that making artworks and appreciating artworks are closely related activities and that sometime art appreciation is best taught during practical art-making lessons.

Time will be provided to allow for questions and the clarification of issues. Ideas about engaging parents, artists and the community (where appropriate) will be shared.
